Capcom will remaster the original Resident Evil for release on Windows PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, the company confirmed today.

Set to launch digitally in early 2015, the upcoming release will feature updated 1080p visuals on both PC and new generation consoles, and 5.1 surround support.

You will also have a choice of playing the game in its classic 4:3 ratio or 16:9 widescreen, while an additional choice of controls will be available including the classic Resident Evil control scheme.
The game originally released in 1996 for the Sony PlayStation before being ported to other platforms; However, the 2015 edition appears to be a remastered version of the game's 2002 GameCube release, based on images that have since been made available by Capcom.

    Translation :

    - I'm Tatsuya Kitabayashi, a producer at Capcom Japan, I started off as a programmer on Resident Evil Zero. This is my first Resident Evil title in quite some time.

    - I'm Yoshiaki Hirabyashi, also a producer at Capcom Japan. My first project at Capcom was the GameCube version of Resident Evil. I was a designer then and I've been involved with the series ever since. Resident Evil first came out in 1996 and helped establish the survival horror genre. I'm sure all you fans out there remember the tense moments and scary thrills of the mansion filled with dark creepy hallways and unexpected surprises lurking around every corner. We at Capcom have enjoyed hearing how this landmark game has provided lasting gaming memories that have stayed with you though the years. We know fans are excited to see what happens next but we also hear from many who want to revisit the beginning of the series, especially the 2002 "remake" version of Resident Evil.

-Thanks to your longstanding support, we are pleased to confirm that Resident Evil will be coming to the west on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC in early 2015. The game will include enhancements to graphics and sound, as well as some other updates.

-Our aim with this remaster id to bring back the original experience of this title in HD. We have been very careful to preserve the atmosphere of the original game and are ensuring that no unnecessary changes will be made.

-When it comes to the graphics, we didn't just want to make them look better. We have taken the game apart, polished up all the different elements and carefully reassembled them in such a way that its original atmosphere shines through.

-The tempo and flow of the original game are an inherent part of its scary atmosphere, so we have made the decision not to disrupt this tempo by making changes that would affect the game's atmosphere.

-I hope that Resident Evil series fans and also fans of the survival horror genre as a whole will enjoy experiencing the original Resident Evil with this remastered version. Be sure to stay tuned to the official Resident Evil Facebook page, where we'll be releasing more news about this title in future. Thanks for watching !

    some screen shot

    - - - Updated - - -

    Release date: November 27th for PS360, "2015" for XBONE/PS4/PC.

    ........Graphics

    • More detailed graphics that retain the horror.
    • The environments come alive with detail thanks to resolution upgrades and non-static 3D models.
    • Post-processing effects like Bloom filters, which were not easy to do at the time of the original release, have been added to make the HD graphics even more realistic.
    • High-Resolution Environments - We've increased the resolution of the background environments by recreating them with a mix of high-res static images, plus animated 3D models.

    Widescreen Support

    • Widescreen (16:9) is supported, so players can experience a greater sense of immersion.
    • In widescreen mode, the screen will scroll. The parts of the screen that get cut off on the top and bottom will scroll into view automatically depending on the character's position.
    • You can switch the display mode during gameplay in real time.

    Sound & New Controls

    • High-Quality Sound - The audio has been remastered to increase the sampling rate, and of course 5.1ch output is also now supported.
    • New Controls
    • You can play using the original control scheme or an alternate control scheme that lets you just push the analog stick to move in the direction you want to go.
    • You can switch the control scheme during gameplay in real time.

If you’ve already run through the mansion countless times, I don’t know if yet another shiny coat of paint will be enough to merit purchasing it again. However, if this is your first chance to play through the game that really brought the survival horror genre to light, it’s past time for you to experience one of the best titles of the 90s.

    Metro - 8/10

    Gamesradar - 8/10

    Rely On Horror - 9.5/10

Some of the older visual flaws detract from the experience and pulled me out of tense moments, but the gameplay hooked me right back in.
