Default 8800GT RIP, should I go for the Radeon 5770?

So I was watching a movie today when I suddenly got some artifacts on my screen and a system lockup. Had to do a hard reset. The artifacts even persisted on the BIOS menu. When I get to Windows the desktop is at 640X480 resolution and what seems like 16 colors. I have a dual-boot configuration and Windows 7 lists my card with an error code 43 (device disabled because it's reporting a problem) and XP reports it with an error code 10 (device cannot start). I'm pretty sure my card's dead.

The same thing happened to a friend's 8800GT last month (during the graphics card shortage). He ended up buying a Gigabyte Radeon 5770 1GB from Rishit for TK 14500.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...YTE-_-14125309

I'm thinking of going for the Radeon 5770 myself, but since I have a few more options now I'm looking for opinions regarding which variant I should get. Could you recommend manufacturers, along with the model (Gigabyte alone has three variants with different coolers )? Some information about price would be also be much appreciated, I saw in a different thread that Gigabyte 5770 is about 13k right now, is this accurate?

Let me know what you guys think

bro there maybe multiple variants from a single manufacturer.but i highly doubt BD vendors would bring all the variants.i think they only bring those variants on which they can maximize their profits.i can be wrong though.:S

Before choosing a manufacturer, see who is giving the most warranty period, cause there are little difference between a standard 5770 of different manufacturers.
    Also consider the price.
xFx is giving 2 years warranty.
Gigabyte should provide 2 year warranty also, i m not sure.
Sapphire gives 1 year warranty I guess.
If Gigabyte provides 2-3 year warranty then go for it as u can save some bucks also.
& Gigabyte is a good brand, don't worry!

& its 12k the last price I knew.

Not really, by any chance, did he buy his card during the first half of 2008? I'm beginning to suspect these cards have a built-in lifetime of two-and-a-half years

BTW, thanks for your input everyone, keep those comments coming....

Sorry to that, i had a xfx 8800gt and it served me quite great until i sold it and got a 4870.
Anyway, there may be still hope for ur card, before buying a new one, google for 'card repair oven method' or if its too complex for u, contact salman vai 'avas9' he is always happy to help.
I saw the sapphire 5770, manufacturing quality is quite good specially the sports car model and high quality heatsink with heatpipes, pretty effective cooling. I heard that gigabyte is also good and cheaper, no idea about xfx!

8800 GT was a very good card for 2006-2008(half). It is the entire card of next generation gpus. Many people call it the best NVIDIA card(Though old). But it is 2010 man, the time when u have to upgrade unless playing games at a very low resolution. So buy a 5770. Nd be happy with it for the next 2 years.

hey my 8800gt just got fried up 2.
DONT go 4 5770. i thought of buying it but 4870 gives equal framerate and 4890 gives much much higher framerate. and that dx11??? just 4 show. in a resolution like 1900*1200 which i am guessing every1 has by now cant get more than 23fps in dirt 2 in dx11.

for higher resolution u always need a good card, but what about 1024x768 or 1280x960, 5770 should do a decent job

5770 is cooler, quieter, consumes less power, overclocks much better, has DX11 aside from other features compared to to 48xx. About DX11, thankfully, not all of DX11 features are for IQ, a game developer can also optimise DX11 for better utilisation of the GPU.

All those features are worth the extra $. Id say for 12,500, a 5770 is a great deal.

My PSU can't handle a 4870, it has only one 6-pin PCI-E connector....

A 5770 consumes less power. I uses only 1-6 pci-e connector. I think ur psu can handle it.

Get 5770, if your budget is low. Also, it's one of the 'best bang for the buck' GPU available in BD. It should cost 12~13k.

And, Sapphire is the best, but I doubt about it's availability in BD currently. XFX.... I don't like it. GIGABYTE.... good enough. So, first search for Sapphire's ones, then Gigabyte.

And, 5770 only needs 1 PCI-E connector. But, if u want to know about 4870, then I'd say, u can run in your PC too. Connect 1 connector of 4870 with your PSU's PCI-E connector. And, connect another by your PSU's Molex connectors.

    LOL.... Will 5770 support TR2 420W? or Will 5770 run in TR2 420W.

After all, it's four-twenty. And, that's why it can run 5770.
