    ReRoll is the debut game from Montreal-based Pixyul, the studio founded by two former Ubisoft Montreal veterans: Julien Cuny and Louis-Pierre Pharand. Cuny, the former head of content for Assassin's Creed, and Pharand, former creative director and head of UbiWorkshop, left Ubisoft late last year to work on something of their own.

    Pixyul's first project is, according to its creators, an isometric persistent online open-world survival action-RPG set in a firmly realistic version of our own world. Players will explore cities and wilderness, craft the items they need to survive and fight against a mutant threat that's the cause of — or perhaps the result of? — the decimation of human society.


    players will be able to explore the world solo or cooperatively with others. They'll have the option to choose from sets of skills, focusing on gardening, scavenging, engineering and raising livestock. Tools, weapons, shelters, medical equipment and cars will be at their disposal through predetermined packages that players can purchase, and ReRoll players will be able to craft new items and learn new skills over time.

    ReRoll employs a "Reality Sync System," that takes real-time environmental data from our reality and feeds it into the game. If it's snowing in Chicago, ReRoll's virtual rendition of the Windy City will likewise be blanketed in fluffy white flakes, Pixyul claims.

    Players may tend to crops or fish or raise chickens that could provide them with life-sustaining eggs. Or they may become highly trained, heavily armed soldiers, keeping the mutant hordes away.

    But unlike other open-world survival games, like Rust or DayZ, ReRoll's creators are putting less of an emphasis on player-versus-player combat and kill-or-be-killed behavior. That doesn't fit with Pixyul's vision for its survival-focused action RPG.

    ReRoll's creators are starting with a limited scope because their game aspirations, mechanically, are ambitious enough, they say. The game and its world will grow over time, and interested players will be able to get into ReRoll as it's gestating, before much of it has been defined.

    Pixyul is taking baby steps in how it builds the world of ReRoll. The developer's method for fleshing out that world is by "drone-sourcing" our own planet, literally scanning in the surface of the earth through high-resolution cameras attached to flying civilian-class drones and processing those images to make a realistic 3D world. Doing so one square kilometer at a time will make drone-sourcing the entire planet a lengthy process — and U.S. Federal Aviation Administration rules about private drones limit what Pixyul can map in the U.S. — but ReRoll's creators believe even small portions of the planet can make for good playgrounds.

    What’s the gameplay?

    The goal is to survive and have fun in the sandbox. Everything in the game is geared toward this, to do so we’re pushing three main gameplay pillars:

    Exploration
    Fighting
    Crafting

    It’s up to you to decide how you want to play and how you want to balance between each one in the game.

    Is this a MMO ?

    Online and persistent from the start.

    Will the game be available on Steam ?

    What are the system requirements ?
    It’s too early in development to give hardware requirements. Our target is to run on old machines and to support a wide variety of hardware. We will be announcing the system requirements at a later date, so stay tuned for an announcement down the road.

    Will there be a DRM ?
    Not in the usual sense BUT you’ll need an internet connection to fully appreciate the game. We know how controversial this can be for some of you but it’s at the heart of the fantasy we’re building, especially the Reality System Sync . These gameplay mechanics are very MMO-esque and it needs data input to simulate reality. Now we will allow you to play offline and there will be no DRM preventing you to do so but the experience will be downgraded (and potentially seriously downgraded if you can’t connect at all). To make sure there is no ambiguity: We’re primarily building an online game. Offline capacities will be a back-up solution.

    How about Mac or Linux version ?
    Too early to say, sorry, we can only commit to Windows support for now. Hopefully our budget will allow us to expand.

    How about other platforms (Consoles, Tablets etc…)
    We need to secure first the budget for the PC version which is our starting point. If opportunities arise, be assured we will look into them.

    What is ReROLL?
    ReROLL is PIXYUL’s first game, It’s an ambitious project with an unusual approach, the game is an Online Open World Survival Action RPG, maybe we could call this an OOWSARPG ? But it’s really more a Crowdfunded Persistent Online Open World Survival Action RPG, so that would make it a CPOOWSARPG…!!! It’s probably easier if you start by watching this video and then afterward check-out this page which gives you an introduction to the Skills System, Crafting, Exploration & the Reality System Sync.

    Game perspective
    The game will have an “isometric view”. Since this term isn’t very well known, the best examples to give would be games like: Diablo, Titan Quest or Path of Exile. This is a traditional view (also called camera) for Action RPG

    Sorry to interrupt, but the answer you’re looking for is probably below in the Drone-Sourcing section.
    Why not make a MMO with this gigantic world ?
    It’s an awesome idea and we’ve been dreaming about this.
    It may be in ReROLL’s future, who knows? But not now, it would be adding an incredibly ambitious goal on top of something already ambitious enough.
    It’s important to break down and tackle challenges one after the other; in the meantime that’s one of the reason why the game is online and persistent from the start.
    These are good steps toward what could be one day an MMO.
    When can I start playing ?
    We expect to deliver the first playable BRICK Mid-2015. We will need your comments and suggestions on the different alphas we will make available before the first BRICK is delivered. Giving us your feedback will have a direct impact on the quality, so the more you participate the better are our chances to deliver something memorable. Obviously a lot of parameters has to be taken into account to reach the Mid-2015 delivery date. The amount of money we’ll be able to raise will have a direct impact on quality and production timing.
    In a nut shell, BRICK 1 is a first playable part of the world (25 sq/km) which is fun to play and contain a first iteration of all the gameplay mechanics we want for the subsequent releases. The Area is Downtown Montreal.
    I’ve checked the shop, you’re selling Characters ?
    Yes and no, we’re selling Game Packages which includes:
    - Lifetime access to all of ReROLL BRICK’s & updates for the Single Player & COOP gameplay modes.
    - A character with some equipment and skills.
    If you want to know more about the skills, how you learn them, etc…you should check out this page.
    The more money I spend, the more equipped and skilled my character is, it sounds like a a Pay 2 Win !
    ReROLL is not a Pay 2 Win for a number of reasons, chief among this: This is not a Free2Play and there is no PVP therefore there is no unfair advantages toward someone else. No one is going to “beat” you because he spent more money in the game.
    Equally important, nothing is locked in the game. You can start with a Basic Character and learn any skills and become whoever you want.
    Our goal is to make the game fun for all types of players and characters.
    If I support you: How do I get my copy of the game ?
    We will send you a link to download the game and a key when it’s ready

    The only two languages we can commit now are English and French. Depending on how much money we’re able to raise and the interest from the community we will look into other languages of course.
