Default PS3 HV exploit released to public

George Hotz, previously known as an iPhone hacker, announced that he hacked the Playstation 3 and then provided exploit details.

The exploit is now available to download from his blog.

In the interest of openness, I've decided to release the exploit. Hopefully, this will ignite the PS3 scene, and you will organize and figure out how to use this to do practical things, like the iPhone when jailbreaks were first released. I have a life to get back to and can't keep working on this all day and night.

Please document your findings on the psDevWiki. They have been a great resource so far, and with the power this exploit gives, opens tons of new stuff to document. I'd like to see the missing HV calls filled in, nice memory maps, the boot chain better documented, and progress on a 3D GPU driver. And of course, the search for a software exploit.

This is the coveted PS3 exploit, gives full memory space access and therefore ring 0 access from OtherOS. Enjoy your hypervisor dumps. This is known to work with version 2.4.2 only, but I imagine it works on all current versions. Maybe later I'll write up how it works

I've gotten confirmation the exploit works on 3.10. Also I've heard about compile issues on Fedora. I did this in Ubuntu. I would really like someone to write up a nice tutorial

This is a good article for what it means for the less technical. A good more technical writeup is here.

    Good luck!
    http://geohotps3.blogspot.com/2010/0....html#comments

Keep in mind that you need a non-slim ps3 for the exploit to work as its based on the linux kernel. But its possible that the knowledge gathered from studying phat-ps3s will enable slim to fall aswell.

We are still far from a working modchip. But as the exploit is now public expect everything to accelerate.

Releasing the exploit to public is both good and bad. because now sony has access to it too. But as i understand, patching this exploit is nearly impossible. for further techical study refer to the links Hotz provided in the blog.

    good news man
have been looking forward to this
so is there any estimated time line for the release of the mod chip?
and what does "But as i understand, patching this exploit is nearly impossible" mean?
so if it isn't possible then how did hotz made it possible?

Estimated time ? are you serious ? Its not a building they are making. There are things to be figured out yet.

by patching I meant fixing from Sony's point of view. Hotz attack involves sending a carefully-timed voltage pulse in order to cause the hardware to misbehave in some useful way. As I understand fixing it will require hardware and software modification from sony.

    that's why i said estimated
there can be estimation of anything and everything based on assumptions
whatever, its good if sony can't get a patch for it

Estimation is possible when you are dealing with something that's under one's domain. It is possible that the chip wont ever come out. so how'd you estimate ?
