If you are experiencing poor file copy performance over the network in Windows 7 PCs, this could be caused by the Windows “Remote Differential Compression” engine. Remote Differential Compression is a Windows feature introduced in Windows Server 2003 and is available on all later versions of Windows. This Windows feature is enabled by default in Windows 7.
Remote Differential Compression (RDC) allows data to be synchronized with a remote source using compression techniques to minimize the amount of data sent across the network. RDC is different from patching-oriented differencing mechanisms, such as Binary Delta Compression (BDC), that are designed to operate only on known versions of a single file. BDC requires the server to have copies of all versions of the file, and differences between each pair of versions are precomputed so that they can be distributed efficiently from a server to multiple clients.
There seems to be a problem with this Windows 7 and disabling this feature resolves the problem with slow file copy performance.

    To disable Remote Differential Compression,
    1. Click Start – Control Panel – Programs – Trun Windows features on or off

    2. Uncheck “Remote Differential Compression” and click OK.
    3. Restart the computer and you should see an improved performance with copying files.

Also you might want to set your LAN speed to "full duplex" and disable flow control.

i already tried this RDC thingy though it is obviously not true ( http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/arc...mpression.aspx ).

my net is doing full duplex already (if you see the graph, it does hit 100% of 100mbps) so that is not the problem.
i have yet to try flow control (though i always had this enabled in winXP and it worked fine).

RDC solved my problem, now I get 12MBps steady over network. Looks like the problem is somewhere else in your case. Try setting up a file share server at one ond and download using IDM so it can dl using many connections, just to test.

I had faced similar problem transferring data over lan from a Vista desktop to a XP desktop. I was able to fix the problem just by turning off the Windows Firewall.

Same problem here, but mine is on Vista. File transfer via WiFi is like a dial up download . LAN wroks fine though.
I was wondering could it be because of the encryption over the WiFi?

will try when i find some time.

windows firewall is off for homegroup/public both, in all PC.
i'll try turning off ESET too.

i even tried full duplex and flow control. not working.

every where people report of getting slow speeds. but i actually dont get slow speed.
data transfer just stops for some time then starts again at full speed.

it's not router as got the same problem even with crossover.

    i get ~3MBps on wifi (24mbps on 54mbps 11g).
im not sure, may be this is normal (if 54mbps is the total bw [up+dwn]).

on lan, due to this problem, i get ~3.5MBps..on wifi i get 3MBps..talk about lameness.

Arrow Re: uber slow file copy over network on win7

nothing to explain really. if any of the PC has ESET firewall turned on, there's a high chance of getting shitty speeds. like this:

although, somehow i am getting full speed between my pc and a laptop with firewall turned on (RDC and some other things tweaked). so it is ESET having trouble with some windows service.
