Default Joe Belfiore: We’re working super hard to bring customers their favorite apps

Joe Belfiore is a man the community has come to know as the face of Windows Phone at Microsoft. He’s been on hand for all major previews and launches of the operating system and runs the team responsible for Windows Phone product definition and design.

Belfiore recently sat down with the BBC for an interview about the current growth in market share that Windows Phone is experiencing. He did this last week, but we missed it and figured a few of you might have missed it as well. There are some interesting points brought up by Belfiore that are worth pointing out. There’s also a video after the break and some highlights from the BBC interview.

So why is Windows Phone currently seeing relatively stellar growth? According to Belfiore, it’s the support for the right languages, right mobile operators, right price points, and full catalog of apps that is why Windows Phone is seeing growth. He does acknowledge it’s taken a few years to get here.

    video link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25033730

What is Microsoft doing to close the “app gap” with Android and iOS? Microsoft is working with specific companies to supply them with the resources needed to put their app out on Windows Phone. Depending on the app and the demand for the app you’ll see them doing things like helping out with marketing, sending in their own developers to help, introducing a company to a contractor, funding it, and more. It’s clear that Microsoft is committed to helping put the best apps out for Windows Phone.
There’s no doubt that 2013 has been a great year for Windows Phone. While a few of us may lament the lack of work done to the operating system itself, it’s hard to ignore the work Microsoft has done to growth both market share of Windows Phone and the availability of quality apps that users demand.

Check out the BBC link below for the full interview and article. If you're reading this in our app, you'll need to visit the BBC in IE to view the video.

Except some localized apps (banks, schools, markets etc), most common apps now are in the store. Some even have 3rd party apps that are better then official apps on iOS/Android/WP. So while it is nice to hear that they are still keeping up the pace, there isn't much to do anymore except some games.
The abuse of greatness is when it disjoins remorse from power.

You say that as if it's a small thing. Just searched for a few apps that I used since I woke up, most aren't there.

No Grubhub, Eat24, Flipboard, Circa News, Canvas (my school app). These are major inconveniences by all accounts, they still have a long way to go. No Twitch.tv was a surprise.

I have ~100 apps installed in WP8 625 now. Some of the apps and features I am missing are:

Slow PDF reading.... way slower than android.
Lack of free games. Actually almost no favorite free games.
    Instaweather
    No good Video player
    No seekbar in Music player

BUT some apps are way better than android in so many aspects.
For example, if I had installed about that many apps in android, let alone 1/5th of that number, my android S3 would have been much much slower. But, surprisingly, inspite of having a 1.2GHz dual core processor, WP8 is ultra fast. No lag between apps. (beside loading storage tab)

And also, Camera is way way better than android.
A super fast and efficient internet explorer.
Very good response to sunlight (auto brightness )
Unified people app and integrated messaging.
Very good editing options in Office mobile.
    and many more.....

I'm actually not happy with the PDF performance in my tablet, what is the fastest reader? I tried out some, Adobe Reader seems to be the best when it comes to very large books.

And No seekbar? What is just stupid.

Well, I tried ~7-8 apps regarding this issue. So far, A Reader is giving the best performance for WP8 which is much lower than any of the androids.

And if your tablet is Windows RT, I heard default PDF reader by microsoft is the fastest.
But if you are using W8, Sumatra PDF reader is the fastest PDF reader in the world right now.

Flipboard, BBM, VLC, Path, Mint are few of the major apps in the works and confirmed to be coming to wp store 2014 Q1.

There is no immediate need for official app if 3rd party working app exists. For example, twitch tv has multiple 3rd party apps (free and paid). And they work well enough.

People claiming this app is not available and that app not available are clearly a minority. If this wasn't the case, WP market share would not have kept rising quarter over quarter. Same goes for android when it was just released.

I just loaded up a 25MB PDF with lots of graphics and tables. It seems just fine to me. PDF scrolling is a bit jerky but that has been the case for PDF forever (even on PC).

I don't really care about games on phones. Battery drains too fast to do anything. That being said, developing games cost money. Free games make money with ads. Until WP market share becomes much higher, there wont be much free games. On the other hand, paid games are good and cheap. Each week 2 games are on sale. For example, $2.99 for halo Spartan assault is a bargain right now.

Use some other weather apps. There are plenty of good ones. For example, accuweather or my fav: weather flow.

I think the build-in video player is quite ok. If you are referring to mkv support, MS doesn't support it natively due to patent issues. VLC player will support it. So you can wait for it.
YXPlayer is a paid app for playing mkv and various other things but it pricey and not that good.

Press and hold the forward/backward button for seeking. Works pretty well.

That's because WP userbase in itself is a minority. Resorting to third party apps for things which people are already used to having official apps for is nothing but an inconvenience.

Rising quarter over quarter is not a big deal since they have nothing to begin with. If it were huge leaps then that would've been a factor but considering it's super slow pace, not so much.

Did you try to zoom in/out? Rendering the text/image during zooming takes a long time(.4-.6s).

And I actually don't care about games other than angry birds, cut the rope, fruit ninja. As far I have seen, all of these are paid games. I am waiting for carrier billing to start in Bangladesh.

For weather , I normally use Bing Weather which is quite inaccurate for ASIA, Accu weather works fine. Nokia's Weather channel is also a great app.

Not really sure what is this inconvenience you are talking about. When you start to use an app, most of the times, it doesn't even behave like the website or you need to learn the apps UI a little bit. Same with switching to a 3rd party app (with may be a little different UI) from official app or using 3rd party app directly.

You login just like you would in "official" app and start using it. The 3rd party instagram client 6tag is arguably better than official instagram app on any platform. Knowing its developer's history, 6sec (for vine) and 6snap (for snapchat) will follow the same path and will be better than respective official apps on any platform soon.

MetroTube (has wp and w8 versions) is arguably one of the best youtube app on any platform.

Just because it is from "3rd party" doesn't mean it has to be inconvenient or worse.

There is a very small reflow delay. It is not fault of the app or the OS. Due to the very nature of PDF (almost entirely vector based), this has been the case for PDF even on PC for a long time until PDF viewing has been GPU accelerated heavily. So expect this to be better with better GPU on the phone. Yes, this is one place you need extremely powerful cores.

I actually have all of those games. Most were $0.99; dirt cheap to buy and no stupid ads inside the game.

It seems you missed the chance. About a month ago, for one day, all of these games were free.

Accu weather works fine for our country and so does weather flow. But weather flow (paid) is simply more beautiful.

How would I know that? It was posted in WPCentral? Are there any other websites that provided that kind of promotional offers?
