Default Report: Windows Phone is the worlds fastest growing smartphone operating system

    From WPCENTRAL

Data from Strategy Analytics suggests sales of Windows Phone units were up over 275% year-over-year for the third quarter.

Windows Phone has been in third place for mobile operating systems for quite some time. The latest developments around BlackBerry only widen the lead for Windows Phone, while cementing its spot in third. However, to catch up to the likes of Android and iOS it has a lot of work left to do. The latest numbers in market share and global shipments show Windows Phone making solid progress in the third quarter of 2013.

Windows Phone in the third quarter of 2013

The big takeaway in a report from Strategy Analytics? Windows Phone has managed to double its market share and now is the worlds fastest growing smartphone operating system. Howd Microsoft and its partners do that? Pretty easy. By shipping 10.2 million smartphones in Q3 2013. It was the first time that Windows Phone has had numbers like that for one quarter. For perspective, in Q3 2012 Windows Phone only moved 3.7 million units compared to 10.2 million one year later.

Thats pretty impressive for Windows Phone, 10.2 million units in one quarter is nothing for us to scoff off considering the past few years of growth. Whats also interesting is how many of those are from Nokia. Weve seen data from AdDuplex that suggests Nokia accounts for nearly 90% of all Windows Phone in use right now. Remember that Nokia sold 8.8 million units this past quarter, which puts it close to that 90% mark of Windows Phone market share.

Additionally, the report points out that Windows Phone has gone from 2% to 4% in market share over the past year. Those numbers are interesting, because weve seen other reports that list Windows Phone at4% marketshare earlier this year.

    Everyone else

Whats the rest of the mobile landscape look like around the globe? Bleak for BlackBerry, thats for sure. Global market share of BlackBerry handsets went from 4% to 1% when looking at the past year. Android is still king of the hill with 81.3% of smartphones shipped in Q3 2013 running the little green robot. Apple was at 13.4% for the same quarter and is the smartphone maker that Windows Phone will have to pass next to get to the number 2 position. Overall, the future of mobile is strong with global smartphone shipments growing 45% in one year. In Q3 2013 we saw 251.4 million units moved, compared to 172.8 million the same period one year prior. The future is bright, the future is mobile.

How long until we pass iOS in quarterly shipments with Windows Phone? Make your predictions below.

0-275% in the initial adaptation phase is absolutely nothing special, though.

I'm not a fan of the WP platform, but more competition drives innovation. Keep up the good work.

Well, "fastest growing" never meant best/highest etc. It simply means this product is getting traction.

The more important news is that Nokia is the 4th now in smartphone business (Samsung -> apple -> LG -> nokia). By next quarter, Nokia will surpass or be pretty close to LG.

Also, Nokia made profit this quarter for the first time in many years. Technically they made profit last quarter too but they did some spending on office relocate which put them in the loss.

If the trend keeps up, they should hit 10% globally by the end of 2014 although they have over 20% share in many countries. Microsoft always focuses too much on US but ironically, that's where they failed to get much traction.

I don't get how Windows Phone is better than android :/ And the next big move NOKIA made was getting sold to Microsoft where they are now the prime phones with the worlds fastest growing smartphone operating system. What is it so special about windows phone? (i never used one so i don't have a clue) is it due to the fact that once Nokia Ruled the Empire of mobile phones and were the most sold mobile units of all times or uncle auntys always loved there nokia 1100's and 6120c's that they opt for nokia smartphones? ps: I dont know why i am starting to like ios O__o

Not really, I rarely see ads here. They've been pretty clear that they're focus on developing markets is what's helping them the most.

It is better because it has best of both worlds (iOS and Android).

The problem is it came much later in the market than other two and thus missing some popular apps. Much of that issue has been resolved though. The last missing things were official Instagram (unofficial instagram client 6tag available and is better than any official instagram client) and Vine (again, unofficial vine client 6sec available already. Both of these have been announced to be released within a few weeks.

After this, I guess only niche local apps (bank, supermarket etc) would be an issue at times.

Also, google has created some artificial problems so people using google services think 10 times before using windows phones.

All phones get released in US first; cheaper in US; gets placement in US TV shows etc etc. All flagship phones go AT&T exclusive and they announce the product as such instead of retail price.

For example, WP is selling really well in India. They just started to sell L1020 in there. If they cared (or rather focused) about this market more, they'd release these models here a few days after official release in US. If you announce a product like phone in Sept, start selling it on Oct but make it available in my country on March, I will obviously lose interest, right?

Is anyone using windows phone in Bangladesh? Is there any way to purchase apps from the windows phone store? Currently I am using two iOS devices and I can buy apps using gift cards from Gadget & Gear. If there is no way to purchase apps then it is not really feasible to use windows phone in Bangladesh.

Nokia wasn't really the flag bearer of smartphone. They did well during the dumb phone to smartphone transition. But they invested and bet on Symbian so much that they didn't see the iPhone coming. They tried with maemo, meego (and ofc improved Symbian) to come up with an answer but failed horribly. Many people say nokia should have gone android instead of WP. Yes, I agree too but I disagree with the timeline. They should have gone android RIGHT when iPhone was released. In that case, today they probably would have gone head to head with Samsung in the market.

But they wasted time with Symbian, maemo, meego and company suffered losses for years; increasingly so. Finally when they came to their senses, it was too late for android. Android has become Samsung's backyard.

People say Nokia could have gone android and made better quality phones than Samsung. Thus they could beat Samsung. lol.
HTC makes better phones than Samsung yet Samsung sells almost 10 times than HTC. HTC is suffering from loss and key executives are leaving the company.

As for "kom daami durable phone"...I disagree. Whether it is low priced or high priced; their phones are ALWAYS durable; always have been. Samsung, Apple, LG, Sony ... you name the price range; Nokia has the best build quality phone in that range.

And don't forget, Android gained market share in the same (actually worse) way: selling cheap phones except the difference is Nokia phones actually perform great unlike low end android phones.

Many are using it. Ofc, it is not selling that well mainly because you cant pirate apps unlike android.

You can buy if you have paypal or credit card. I have bought a few games and some apps.

I believe gift card system is being worked on.

Also, I have heard they are working on carrier billing. If that goes thru, you can simply buy apps using your operator mobile balance.

Carrier billing in Bangladesh? I thought I would never see this day arrive, guess I will have to wait and see.
Gift card system is also important because very few people have international credit card or paypal.

Yep! A week ago or so MS stated that it wants to capture developing market by introducing consumers with the windows platform by the huge feature phone channel Nokia has/had. And they intend to do it for as least as $20.

A lot of the 81% is Android 2.x phones, outdated phones which lost software support ages ago. But helps a lot as a statistic though.

Oh you are right, the market share figures are also very similar which is why I thought those were for phones in the market and not units shipped.

As far as I know about Android news, KitKat will end fragmentation. So let's not worry about older phones.

As for windows phones, they are not half bad. Live tiles and those jolly colors are quite eye catching. Also users get to play Xbox live games.

It's an attempt at ending fragmentation, won't end it by any means. There's so many OEMs making different phones with different screen resolution, design and hardware, it's not possible to end fragmentation at one shot. Kitkat should be a big move forward though, let's see how it performs. In not impressed with 4.3 but 4.4 promises even more optimizations.
