Pixel count is not the only determinant. Also, a video is not just images; it has audio channel(s) too.

SGN3 camera is still inferior to L1020 (for video recording AND audio recording let alone still images).

I don't think there ever was any doubt in anyone's mind about L1020 crushing pretty much everything else as far as camera prowess goes, @CvP .

Total gimmick to be exact. No one uses mobile phones to take movies. It is possible of coarse, but it is like walking to China. As that is possible too. Just people usually do not do it.

    Some notes about the movie.

    1. They used steady cams. Do not get wowed by the fluid panning and follow shots. It is impossible to do without a steady cam or some other stabilization technique even for 5D mkIII, which is way heavier. BTW this is not the IS of the phone.

    2. There were a lot of glare from the sun. You cant do anything about it on a phone. Until someone puts out ND and polarized filters for the phone.

    3. Lets talk about the 550D he compared the phone with. This is the section, for which I call the whole thing a joke. The biggest difference between the 550D and 1020 is 550D has a way bigger sensor. At least 5 times bigger sensor. Forget about megapixels here. Sensor size wins every single time. The 550D is actually recording way more detail.

About the flatter and dull look on the 550d part of the clip. Every DSLR video graphers do some things. One, they turn contrast, sharpness to zero also lowers some other settings. Now this gives a flat and soft video. But something else happens. The video actually contains almost way more detail. If you have high contrast you will loose details in the dark areas. Which you cant bring back in post precessing. Also with high sharpness you get jagged edges in stuff, and that is almost impossible to fix in prost precessing. You can sharpen the video in post processing.

Also about color correction. It is also universally done in post precessing.

    4. Internal mic.

No one uses internal mics. Not even for DSLRs. Everyone always uses a different directional mics. Like the Zoom H4 handheld one.

The last two points are the reasons this is a pure gimmick.
You can do a movie on a phone if you wanted, but that would not be cheaper or easier than using say a DSLR or a red camera.

And people will get misguided with this video. As you personally wont be able to take no where near as close a movie like this one. Ever. Without using the techniques and gears they used.

or the point is that it is good enough for an amateur field unlike other phones? And RED Camera? really? Compare a $700 smartphone with $50000 cam...

An award winning National Geographic photographer took only two L1020 in a tour and he was completely satisfied. Guess that was gimmick too?

The Note II even is totally fine for most use. You have to understand that most users who will get this phone will be normal people. Not cinematographers. So these features dont mean squat.

It is better than most phones in terms of cameras. But most people dont buy phones because it has a camera. If you are serirous about photography get a SLR. If not get a point and shoot. A mobile camera is a mobile camera. No point blowing it to high heavens.

Yes Nokia did a wonderful job. And Yes I thank them for it as their technology will trickle down to other phones and we will get better phone cameras. But the point of this video is not this. Its point is you should get the phone and you will be able to make movies.

You see now a days companies go to insane lengths to prove that their products are the best. But we should filter out the gimmick and find what is useful.

Like in case of my Note II. The touch pen is awesome. you can do loads with it. Or the advertisers would you believe. But in real life, it's use is really limited. Not by the device, but my capabilities. So when I bought it, i did not buy it because of the touchpen. If i need to draw on a tablet really good, I will get a Intous 5. Period.

    Hope you got my point.

L1020 is on par with entry level SLR without the bulk. It is better than most mid-end point and shoot when you consider you don't need to carry another thing in your pocket.

Your argument is invalid or we would all be carrying iPod/COWON/iRiver in our pockets along with a phone, fm radio, a video player etc.

Smartphone camera is basically eating camera market alive except high end DSLR. It is only natural for smartphone camera too push the limits and only leave high end DSLR in the market.

Cant agree with you on this point. There is no way 1020 sensor is even close to in quality of even the cheapest DSLR.

Look at the Size difference. The 2/3" sensor size vs the APS-C sensor size of Canon 1100D. That alone makes your claim null.

And lets talk about pixel density. 41MP in that area will create such a electron leakage that images will be unusable in very low light conditions. And I have seen noise in images as low as 400 ISO in that camera. That is really really good for a cell phone camera. But nothing for an SLR. The 1100D can take pictures that are good upto 3200 ISO and take pictures that are usable upto 6400 ISO.

Maybe you are right in one point. That is cell phones are eating into pns market. That is indeed happening. But to eat into SLR markets? That could be even more than 10 years away.

A entry level DSLR like the 1100D or the D3100 is in their own league. They are way better than probably the best pns out there. Let alone a cell phone camera.

Just my point. BTW I have used my friends canon 1000D extensively, so I can make these points.

Sensor size is a major point but it is not the only differentiator.

I'm not saying L1020 is going to replace cheap DSLR right now. I'm saying it has the potential to eat a LARGE part of that market because the quality is very close/on par depending on scenarios.

It would if there wasn't 41MP image and pixel oversampling tech.

PnS has already more or less destroyed low end SLR market. People only buy cheap SLR now if they really want a SLR but cant afford a good one. Previously, anyone who wanted good pictures, went for S

Its like PC vs tablets... tablets are fun and all, but when it comes to real works such as development and designing... nothing beats a PC.

I remember reading about music videos being made with the iPhone 5, so obviously this is entirely possible as long as you're not aiming for anything professional-grade. It all depends on how much you value portability against horsepower.
