Default Sudden Abnormal Increase in CPU Usage!

    Hello folks

My cpu usage for the past 2-3 days suddenly increased for wat they used to be for same tasks. For example when i played Crysis 3 5-6days back, my cpu usage was like 50-70%. But now its around 70-95% for same visual settings same map. Even my idle usage increased to 5-20% from a mere 3-7%. From windows resource monitor i can see most of the apps are taxing my cpu more than wat they used to be 2-3days ago. Even my maximum frequency level has increased quite a bit if i remember correctly. Atm i am running firefox+ u torrent with MSI afrerburner+ HWinfo32 in the background and my max frequency is 55%. When I play crysis it goes to 90-98%. I am not sure, i never noticed max freq stat before but i have a feel it wasnt used to be this high.Wat may be causing this to happen? Any insight and solutions?

    I am using i5 700 1st gen for the last 3 years.

I have already checked for virused

    Thanks for ur time

    1. check CPU temperature
    2. check if you have enough paging space
    3. is rivatuner running with your afterburner?

yes cpu has thermal throttling option, when it gets hot, it automatically lower the clock speed to achieve marked max temperature.

    > Can cpu temp increase cpu usage?

Not directly, no. However, what it does is force the CPU to underclock itself to reduce damage -- and thus making the same tasks need more resources.

yes cpu has thermal throttling option, when it gets hot, it automatically lower the clock speed to achieve marked max temperature.

I am currently running Rivatuner+Afterburner+HWinfo to see all my stats like cpu+gpu temp n usage ingame.
Abt my cpu temp...its been quite a bit high last few days. My idle is like 42-52C whereas while playing crysis it goes as high as 72-78%! Its almost funny when i see my cpu temp is 78C whereas gpu (5850) temp is 72C while playing crysis3

    - - - Updated - - -

And wat abt the 'maximum frequency' thingi from windows resource monitor>CPU? Its been 50-55% when idle and goes as high as 105-120% under full load! Is it bad or something?

    Have you overclocked your processor?
Few days ago I found out that Rivatuner has opened up 120processes and RAM usage was 99%. And obviously cpu usage was a bit higher than normal.
If you are using intel stock cooler 78 degree at full load is nothing to be worried about. (though it is designed to run at 72 degree, you can try to increase rpm of cpu fan, try to keep the temperature under 70)
Btw u can try reinstalling windows. worked for my frnd.

Your processor has a certain clock speed, that is its max speed.
but if it has no tough job to perform, i mean no load, it will automatically down clock for saving power.

100% frequency means its running at its max frequency.

    120%?
maybe thats because of turbo boost.
    though mine never crossed 102%.
& i have modified the turbo boost settings.

Abnormal processor or memory usage can be caused by a virus, but from what the OP states, the usage hasn't gone up by an alarming rate, I'd not worry too much if I were you. Just to be sure though, go to control panel and set your power settings to balanced, remember when the processor is clocked lower, it needs more cycles to get the job done, so it could be something with your power management settings.

Not yet. At at least not completely. Wat i am planning to do is install x2 tt 120mm intake fans on my casing (atm i am using generic casing with x1 120mm intake x1 80mm exhaust fans-non-brand), clean my cpu heat sink, reapply thermal paste (i reapplied thermal paste 2 weeks back, but might hv done it wrong, might hv used too much paste) and monitor the situation for a cpl of days. Then i will update u guys. But u guys been a ton of help so far
