Default Is this the best Gaming Headset Under $100.

Sorry for the cheesy title . . . I'm gonna order a headset within this week. I'm not an audiophile(a noob to be exact), so I'm asking for you guys' opinion on this.

    > I'v choosen the Audio Technica ATH-AD700. Link - http://www.amazon.com/Technica-ATH-A.../dp/B000CMS0XU

    > This is not a surround sound headset. Can't find anything good under my budget. Also heard a good stereo headset always outperforms a cheap surround sound one

    > Read some good reviews about this, but I thought it would be a better idea to ask you guys before(rather then after) ordering.

    > My budget is $100. Please suggest accordingly. Thanks in advance.

You can also consider Fischer Audio FA-011 as AD700 lacks bass.

Price? (no luck in amazon/newegg) . . . . . Its true that the AD700 lacks bass, but heard enabling the bass boost on the sound card will pump it up a bit. Nowhere near 'decent' though. Btw my main concern is gaming not music/movies

Well yeah for gaming AD700 is the best headphone under $100. It has huge soundstage but even for gaming it might seem a little dull during explosions, car crash etc. Of course low bass/no bass is more helpful for competitive gaming but still for enjoying games you need booming bass.
Anyway AD700 is just light on bass, not that it doesn't have any bass or something. Its more than good enough.
But F-011 has both soundstage and booming bass. The last time I checked it was about $118. AFAIK you have to import it from russia. But if you can't bring it here then AD700 is the best available option for you.

Thanks for the detailed info. I read about the vast sound stage and positional audio of the AD700. And No, I can't afford to bring a piece from russia :/

    >Any idea about which sound card I should get at the very least to give enough juices to the headset? They should have either CMSS-3D or dolby headphone as I'l be needing that surround sound effect. Budget is ~$60

    >I'm guessing external DAC isn't an option as I'm aiming for gaming.

PS: I'l be playing mostly BF3 and BF4 and also own a pair of Solo-7c.

External DAC will be fine for your needs too if you go that route, but good DACs are generally more expensive. The AD700 is awesome for competitive gaming, the huge sound stage helps with footsteps(positional aware) very much, but it lacks bass as Shoaib bhai said. See if you can get a AKG Q7xx series in your budget, I don't know about the current prices but these should be really good for positional sound and has good(ample) bass.

As for the sound card, get a cheap Xonar DGx or a Xonar DG, they are usually around $25-30.

Thanks. Even though I got 2 PCI slots in the mobo 1 is already covered up by the gpu. Do you think I'l be able to fit in the DG here or go for the DGx instead? -http://banglagamer.com/attachment.ph...0&d=1350939604, http://banglagamer.com/attachment.ph...1&d=1350939751

Also, I can't find a single AKG Q7xx headset in my budget on either amazon/newegg . . :/ . . . Seems like the AD700 is my only choice here.

You can easily fit a DGx on the bottom PCIe slot. The card might get a bit hot due to the GPU, but nothing serious.

PCI versions of the sound card will be a tight fit though. So I wouldn't recommend that, and you can also check out the CAL(Creative Aurvana Live), they usually go for around $90-100 and are really comfy and has good soundstage. I used Zulk's one in a tourney and really liked it.

Thanks for the recommendation. The CALs do seem a very nice pair of cup for the money and they are about $82 now in amazon. But I was leaning towards a open pair of headset rather than closed. I got a feeling that I wouldn't be able to game too long with the closed cups. How comfortable were these on your head, was it a bit too heavy for long sessions of gaming? I'm asking these questions because the AD700 is renowned for being lightweight and very comfy, as you already know.

On another note, can you recommend a good pair of open design headset under $100?

They were the most comfortable HP I've ever worn aside from the DT990 which has huge ear cups anyway. That was Hemlock bhaiya's.

Even though the CAL is closed, it's really comfortable for the time I used. It was 1 CS match, and about 30mins of music that day if I recall correctly. And since you are spending ~$100, don't go for any headset, my request. Get a HP and a cheap boom/clip on mic. Search around on Headfi, and you can maybe find something nice around your budget.

My bad. I meant a open design headphone(not a cheap surround sound headset). About the mic I think I'l go with this one here - http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-Zm-Mic1.../dp/B00029MTMQ. Performs pretty good for a $10 mic according to the reviews . . .
