New CryEngine revealed
Crytek has lifted the lid on the next version of its CryEngine game development tools. The first change is that it’ll no longer be identified by a number as they believe it’s now a completely different beast to when it started.
Going forward the engine will simply be known as CryEngine. “Since CryEngine 3 was launched in 2009, we’ve dramatically changed the engine so many times, with so many major new features, it’s not the same engine anymore,” Crytek business development director Carl Jones said in a statement.
Crytek also promised to offer better support to game licensees by combining its Engine Licensing and Research & Development teams.
This is “in essence offering Crytek’s R&D as a service for developers using the new CryEngine,” Crytek said.
The new engine supports development on all current-generation platforms. Next-gen, Wii U, PC, and “further platforms” will be added in the future.
