Lightbulb Christian Bale offered $50m to play Batman again

Christian Bale offered $50m to play Batman again

Could Welsh-born actor reprise caped crusader role?

Reports claim Bale is being placed under huge pressure by film execs to play the role of Batman in the new Superman v Batman project

The enigmatic multi-millionaire was thought to have hung up his superhero cape for the last time – in a bid to put his famous crime-fighting past behind him.

But it now seems Welsh Oscar-winning actor Christian Bale is facing an eye-watering $50m (£32m) offer to tempt him into reprising his Batman role for the fourth time.

The Haverfordwest-born 39-year-old is understood to be under “huge pressure” from film producers to reprise his role as the Gotham City hero.

Last month it was revealed the new Man of Steel film, due for release in 2015, will feature both Superman and Batman, with fevered speculation surrounding who will play the caped crusader.

Bale has previously insisted he would not play the role again following the conclusion of director Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.

But it seems Warner Bros has put out its own answer to Commissioner Gordon’s Batsignal to try to get the star on board.

According to reports, film bosses will do everything they can to make him change his mind.

A source told The Sun newspaper: “Bale is facing extraordinary pressure.”

According to a new eBook Beyond Batman: The Unauthorised True Story of Christian Bale and His Dark Knight Dilemma by Vince Russel, Bale currently has a $50m offer on the table.

Russel cites sources close to Legendary Pictures that claim Bale may have “no choice” but to accept the deal.

It comes just weeks after Bale ruled himself out of playing Batman in the Justice League film.

Asked about reprising his Batman role, Bale previously said: “We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three Batman films. That’s enough. Let’s not get greedy."

“It’s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another. I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with.”

Other contenders tipped for the role include Tyler Hoechlin, Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Michael Fassbender, Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Pine.

Born in Pembrokeshire to a circus performer and a commercial pilot, Bale’s first acting foray was a commercial for fabric softener Lenor in 1982. Five years later he won the lead role, aged just 13, in Steven Spielberg’s Empire of the Sun. Today, he’s best known as the darker guise of the caped crusader.

But despite the speculation, film critic Gary Slaymaker rubbished the rumours yesterday, claiming Bale was unlikely to return to the role.

“This is all just part of industry hype, surrounding what will be a very popular film.”

Slaymaker, who rated Bale as Batman, said another actor could easily take up the role.

“I also rated Michael Keaton as Batman. I didn’t rate Val Kilmer, or George Clooney – but that was more to do with how bad the films were."

“At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter who plays the Caped Crusader or who plays Superman, everybody will have their favourite."

“There were a lot of complaints when Henry Cavill got the role of Superman and negative press for Man of Steel, mainly because people had such fun memories of the Christopher Reeves Superman films."

“Frankly, I didn’t have those fond memories. Man of Steel was a film I always wanted for Superman.”

Slaymaker added that, much like the role of Doctor Who which changes actors periodically, it is probably a part that should be passed on.

“It makes sense to start afresh: you have any Superman, you might as well have a new Batman. After that you’re probably be introducing a new Wonder Woman and a new Green Lantern.”

And he said Bale was right to bow out after such a superb trilogy.

“I think the role of Batman is probably quite a fun one to play, but it’s not very challenging in terms of nuance. After finishing such an impressive trilogy, I think for Bale it would be a little bit disappointing to take it up again.

“As far as I am concerned, and probably as far as he is concerned, the work has been done. I think it will probably be years before someone takes another run at Batman by himself again.”
