Default Tool to track lost Android phones

Google announces tool to track lost Android phones

Android owners will soon have a way to locate their lost devices. Later this month, Google will release a new app called Android Device Manager, which will allow Android users to track down their devices on a map in real time, active their ringer, and even wipe their contents. It'll be available for all devices running Android 2.2 and up — which, at 98.7 percent of devices, is just about everyone — and will require being hooked up to a Google account.

I saw xperia has this same function built-in named My xperia. But these will only work if
    i) You are connected to internet, and
ii) You're logged into same google account, AND
iii) You've activated this feature/app in your phone.

so these are useless if you want to track your stolen phone.

But does it work, say if your phone gets stolen and the thief wipes all your data or resets the phone via settings, will it still be helpful? Would be awesome if google launched a satellite for tracking each and every android based with registered features, will be happy to pay extra for such a service.

This is an old feature of ios. on ios you will be able to lock the iphone (or ipad, ipod), change the passlock, erase contents, make it ring, you will get email notification if the device has found somewhere... etc. but it will require internet. Have you guys seen the upcoming ios7 feature called "activation lock", the phone will be kept locked even the thief wipes it? no one but the owner with id and password will be able to unlock it, so the idevices will be worthless to the thieves.

And you can be sure someone will come up with a circumvention for that for completely legit reasons, even.

    End result is zero.

The best is cerbarus with rom integration.

    Factory resetting wont remove it.
Only way to remove it is to install another rom
