The new chip family will support Microsoft's Windows 7 DX11 graphics, which AMD graphics boss Rick Bergman told us will be Chimpzilla's secret weapon in its ongoing display technology battle against Nvidia. The top of the line, a single PCB Dual GPU card called the 5870X2, will hit the stores at $599. The single GPU version will be called the 5870 and will set you back only about $399. The 5850, the least expensive video card in the 58xx line, will sell for about $299.
Sources inside AMD claim that the upper end cards will be released on 10th September, which will stick them into the shops in plenty of time for the launch of Windows 7 and DX11 in late October.
So far there has been no reply to the news from Nvidia. It is starting to look like the Green Goblin will have a fight on its hands with AMD over DX11 in the gaming market.
However we do note that Nvidia has booked an event for the same day as the AMD launch, so it might have a cunning plan.
