Michael Bay Developing GHOST RECON Video Game Adaptation as Potential Directing Vehicle

Michael Bay has conquered the toy world with the Transformers franchise, and now his sights are set firmly on the gaming universe. The filmmaker has struck a deal with Ubisoft to develop a feature film adaptation of the video game Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon at Warner Bros., and Bay is eyeing the project as a potential directing vehicle. The video game series follows a fictional squad of U.S. Army Special Forces designed to execute highly classified special operations using advanced weaponry. Hit the jump for more.

News of Bay’s involvement with the Ghost Recon series comes courtesy of Variety, which notes that this will be Bay’s first time working with Warner Bros. Bay will oversee the project through his Platinum Dunes studio and had this to say about the collaboration:

“Ubisoft’s artistic vision and the Ghost Recon franchise’s core tenets convinced me that we could build something special together. It’s a unique title with very cool components – including a huge global canvas with which we will create an amazing film.”
Ubisoft is currently looking for a screenwriter to put on the project, and should Bay spark to the scribe’s take on the material, he could sign on to direct. This is only the latest in a line of feature film adaptations that Ubisoft has been kicking off lately, as they have Michael Fassbender set to produce and star in Assassin’s Creed and Tom Hardy attached to topline Splinter Cell.

Video game companies aren’t exactly known for being lax with feature film adaptations of their material, and Ubisoft intends to be actively involved with the aforementioned adaptations, ensuring that the DNA of their games remains intact in each film. Whether Bay would be willing to give up a portion of his creative control in order to direct Ghost Recon remains to be seen, but he will indeed be producing the live-action feature. Currently, though, Bay is busy getting ready to start production on Transformers 4.
