The Division focuses on a 2001 operation called Darkwinter, which "revealed how vulnerable we've become." A trailer explained that society has become "fragile" and "complex," noting that the fact that consumers spend millions of dollars on Black Friday and makes us vulnerable to a pathogen that could wipe out shoppers by being passed along via cash
The trailer explores a doomsday scenario where after a few days, the stock market would collapse, and society would essentially collapse. Fictional legislation called "Directive 51," signed in 2007, is said to be put in place to deal with that situation.
The trailer asked "what will it take to save what remains?" The Division takes place three weeks after the infection hit New York City.
