Lightbulb "we've maxed out the 360 but we haven't maxed out the PS3." says Senior VP of EA

Patrick Soderlund, Senior VP of EA Games Europe, says that the 360 has been 'maxed out' but PlayStation 3 hasn't been. Fighting talk right there.

"I like the Natal," he says. "That's cool. It's an interesting device, so I'm truly impressed by Xbox. It's my personal favorite console... I think Microsoft is on a roll right now. They're doing really well. If I was Sony, I would have a headache, to be honest."

However, he then goes on to say "Sony has a lot of good games this year. If you go to their booth, there's a very consistent, high quality product line-up and that will help them.

"I do think that we'll see developers inside the organisation getting to understand the PS3 better and I think that we're getting more power out of PS3 right now... I think that we've maxed out the 360 but we haven't maxed out the PS3."

I guess its normal for EA to praise PS3, seeing that PS3 was the biggest revenue earner for EA.

PS3 sales for the quarter under discussion came in at 139 million USD, followed by the PC on 86 million USD and the Xbox 360 on 81 million.

yes thats right EA earned more from PC than xbox 360.

The trend seems to be similar for other publishers as well. (hence the UBISOFT presence on SONY conference ).

Coding games for the PS3 is much tougher than the xbox 360(arguably as tough or even tougher than coding for the PC) since the cell processor is very highly parallel in architecture.

Hence, utilising all that power is difficult aswell

On the other hand, the xbox360 is nowhere near as parallel, and maxing out its capabilities is a much easier job, but its maximum performance is less than that of the PS3. Thats why games released early on looked better on the xbox360 compared to the PS3 because game devs didnt want to spend too much time coding for the PS3, but eventually the PS3 caught up in terms of performance and graphics and will soon eclipse the xbox360

They just dont sell as many units because of the price

Keep in mind that im only talking about the CPU, the GPU is more or less similar in performance between the two

That has always been the Sony way. They put in complicated hardware so that it lasts longer. Look at the PS2, would've anyone thought about making as visually pleasing as GoW back when it was released?

Hopefully in the next-gen of consoles we'll see upgradeable hardware, but that'll add more complications as games must run on the initial hardware as well.
