<script>showUSloc=(checkLocale('uk')||checkLocale('au'));document.writeln(showUS loc ? 'US, ' : '');</script> Just as Activision and Raven aren't showing a lot of Singularity at E3; we're not expecting much out of Wolfenstein at this show, either. Pencil in your calendars for id's annual QuakeCon later this summer, which is where both companies will probably show off a lot more of their games. Instead, all that's planned for Wolfenstein is a demo in Activision's theater behind closed doors.
The big news here is that there's a new trailer that's supposed to show off the game's new vibe. Sure, protagonist B.J. Blazkowicz kills Nazis like it's no one else's business, but he's now more of an Indiana Jones-type character who sort of lucks his way through his encounters. The trailer shows B.J. infiltrating a German battleship, dispatching Nazi officers and sailors before being cornered and then narrowly escaping thanks to a magical amulet that decides just then to show off what it can do. That sets the stage for the adventures in this game, as B.J. must discover where the amulet's powers come from.
That leads to discovering that the Germans are toying with a mysterious energy source called Black Sun that is opening up portals to another dimension, called the Veil. The Veil dimension is sort of a shadowy version of our own, and you can use it to circumnavigate your way obstacles. If a wall is blocking your progress, it might have a hole blown open in it on the Veil side.
Raven is showing off a new level called Hospital, though there's no opportunity for hands-on with the game. The demo does show off some of the special Veil powers that y you can use, such as Mire, which slows down bullets sort of like bullet time. Veil Sight lets you see in the dark, as well as detect special objects. Raven is also showing off the Tesla Gun, a powerful electrical weapon. Then there are the puzzle elements of the gameplay; the Nazis have special Veil Nullifiers that short out your Veil abilities. You must destroy the nullifiers in order to get your Veil powers back.
That's about it for now. Like we stated earlier, we'll probably have to wait August's QuakeCon for more on Wolfenstein, but the game has progressed quite a bit since we saw it at last year's QuakeCon, and it'll be interesting to see how the Wolfenstein name holds up after all these years.
