    Default Emergency!

guys, i need yor immediate help wid smt, so here goes...

    My current system

    1. CPU - Pentium 4 HT 531 Presscot @ 3Ghz
    2. Motherboard - Intel 915GAV
    3. Memory - 1GB DDR400 PC3200
    4. GPU - nVidia 8400GS
    5. HDD - 80GB ATA Hithachi + 120GB SATA Seagate Baracuda
    6. Optical drive - ASUS DVD RW
    7. PSU - dedicated 200w
    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

the thing is i am going to replace my 8400gs with a 8800GTS 320MB. i'm confused with -
    1. how much extra wattage is it gonna take?
    2. can i run the system with a dedicated 300w PSU?

    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

right now i cant afford a new CPU. bt, i can upgrade the motherboard with smt which supports DDR2 memory, in that case -
    1. which motherboard should i go for?

    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

guys, i'd really appreciate your help! thank you!

What do u mean by dedicated 200W? Basically u have a 200W PSU for the PC?

The 8800GTS 320MB is a power hog, there are better options available in the market, like the 4670 which perform almost similarly but consume less power. The 8800GTS would require atleast a 400W delux /Tt or some other quality PSU

As for an upgrade, the RAM and processor needs to be changed. so bacially ur looking at a mobo, processor, Video card, PSU. Thats almost like another system, but its ok if u just change those parts

    Whats ur budget?

i think pure 300w would be enough for a 8800gts........coz i already run it by Delta 300w...........

prescott + 8800GTS 320MB? prescott is also very power hungry

Even if it works i wouldnt recommend it...

As for the motherboard, get the Gigabyte G31 motherboard, along with the PSU, GPU and 1GB memory. PSU should be a around 3,300. RAM should be 1700 and mobo should be around 3800

    According to my calculation:

Your current system needs : 214 W (I added 2 casing cooler assuming you already have it)
If you upgrade your card you will need : 273 W

    1. So you need extra 59 W.
    2. Yes you can use a "Dedicated" 300 W PSU but again be sure that its real output is really 300 W.

(Power needs are calculated without any PCI card. This calculated W is recommended, a slight lower W PSU should be able to run your system properly, again thats not recommended.)

I also think that a G31 mobo will be the best choice for low budget. Personally I prefer Gigabyte.
If you need detail power needs for your system, PM me.

You mentioned that a slightly lower wattage will run your system, it will but thats only because very rarely is both the CPU and GPU loaded over 80% together. If it is, at some point of the time, say by a new game which is heavily multithreaded and stressful on the GPU, the wattage near what the PSU calculator calculated can be reached or eclipsed

Keep in mind that while your PSU calculator probably calculated 273W based on, say, a 85% CPU utilization and 90% system load(mine came with those figures to 270W) that isnt counting the fact that generic PSU manufacturers always overrate their PSU's since they rate their wattage at a lower temperature, or the capacitor aging factor. Hence a generic 350W PSU will hardly ever give 350W, and their 12V rails are also usually poor with more emphasis on the 5V rail which is hardly of any use

You also need atleast a 20% cushion for PSU capacitor aging, since the wattage of the PSU will degrade over time, around 20% over a period of two years for a generic PSU with high usage. Taking that into factor pushes the wattage near 350W, so a 400/450W delux or a Tt Litepower 400W is the minimum id recommend for this system

@patron: if you dont mind, can i ask how much youre getting the 8800GTS 320MB for?

If you need detail power needs for your system, PM me.
i ran it through TT's watt calculator and it shows 352w!

Just add 25% over the PSU calculator for capacitor aging and safety measures.

Well in the end, you will need a DLP-34/TT light power or something equivalent to run this system, without any worries. Its always better to use a bit higher PSU than your system needs.
