Exclamation Advise needed for building a New PC

    Hi all,

I am planning on replacing my current setup with a brand new one. This is not going to be a gaming or movies setup. It will be mostly for downloading and storage that I can continue with for the next 3-4 years. My current setup is an E6600 on an Intel mobo that I have been using for 5 years. I will only use the HDDs from my current setup in my new setup. Nothing else. I dont have a monitor as well because I use remote desktop from laptop and spashtop from ipad and iphone to access and use the PC. I can connect it to my TV through HDMI if for any reason I cannot connect to it remotely.

    Current Setup:
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.6Ghz
    Motherboard: Intel D945GCNL
    RAM: Kingston 2GB DDR2 667
Graphics: Sapphire Radeon HD4670 (not being used)
Sound: Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme (not being used)
    PSU: Xigmatech 500W
Storage: One 1TB HDD (Samsung), one 500GB HDD (WD) and another one is 320GB HDD (Samsung). Will use all 3 in new build
Optical Drive: Samsung DVD writer (works). Sony DVD writer (don't think it works). Will use Samsung one in new build
    OS: Windows 7 Pro

    New Setup:
So far, I have looked into the following and have a few questions which I am requesting you guys to help answer. My budget is 50k. Can stretch it to 60k. I am planning to buy most parts from here. I am visiting KL next month, but want to refrain from buying mobos or processors from there because I cannot use a Malaysian warranty in BD.

CPU: core i5 3470 - Smart Technologies quoted me Tk 16,200 for this. Can I get a better price for this elsewhere? Also, is i5 3570 available anywhere and at what price? I am assuming to be somewhere around Tk 19,000.

PSU: Computer Source quoted me Tk 4,000 for Corsair CX 600 v2 and Smart Technologies quoted me Tk 5,000 for Gigabyte Superb E720 both non-modular. I am more inclined to the Corsair but I am looking for modular PSUs. Can you suggest where I can get a good modular PSU? A 500W PSU would be more than enough for me.

Motherboard: Going for Gigabyte H77-D3H. Smart Technologies quoted Tk 12,800 for this. For the Gigabyte H77-DS3H, they quoted Tk 10,500. But, I've got me heart set on the D3H. Can I get a better deal elsewhere? Also do you guys have a better suggestion for an H77 motherboard that I can find in BD?

RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum DDR3 4GB*2 1600. Yet to find it anywhere but I know some shops carry this. Can anyone help please?

Storage: I have 3 HDD in my current setup. One 1TB HDD (Samsung), one 500GB HDD (WD) and another one is 320GB HDD (Samsung). I want to add an SSD. Someone on this forum mentioned that Crucial M4 will be available soon? Can anyone suggest when and where?

Casing: I have not actively looked for a casing, but I need one with good amount of space inside for good airflow and also because I have 3 HDD and 1 SSD that I plan on using. Need a case with fans. Suggestions welcome.

Operating System: I want to use Windows 8 Pro with this.

I will appreciate any help you guys can offer. Please help me build my system.

    Thanks!

    What is ur budget?
    U didn't mention about GPU?
PRO:i5 3470 can be found at 15k maybe at Startech solution at ECS market.
PSU:Never buy Gigabyte psu's.Corsair psu r sheer in performance but if u can't afford it then go CM which is best value for buck$.other brands r also good choice.
MOBO:At this price range i think asrock mobo may be the best choice.
    RAM: @Vanguard .

Thanks for the reply cool.dx.rip! I mentioned my budget in the 1st post. Its 50k. I do not need a GPU because I will not be using this for gaming. I will not even connect to a monitor. Well maybe once for OS setup. But thats it.

you really don't need to spend that much money just to download and storage. Your current pc is enough for that purpose I guess.

since your intended purpose is storage, I'd recommend you to replace your 320gb and 500gb hdds with a couple of WD green 3TB drives.

I know I dont need that setup for download and storage . But my poor old E6600 is hitting 52-54 degrees on idle and 59 to 60 degrees on load. Even that is fine I guess, but I want to upgrade. Will appreciate any help.

    CPU: 1st of all 3470 is a great choice....make sure u get d box cpu...with (original fan)
u can also buy an aftermarket cpu cooler @3k (if ur so concerned with temp)

GPU: buy a mid-end gpu at least....it will make ur HD movies look better..(if u buying for watching movies on large screen TV, u definitely need one)

    PSU:
Corsair CX 600 v2 is NOT 4k...its around 7.5-8k....BUT if ur not buying a high end gpu...buying a 600w does not make any sense..!! get 350 or 380 of any good brand..!!

Motherboard: u can also buy b75m-d3h @6.5-7.5k but if u want to spend more money on mobo get a asrock...they look way better then giga..!!

RAM: Dominator is simply for gaming or 3D graphics etc....u don't need that go for Corsair Vengeance 8gb @around 5k (its more then enough)

Casing: I prefer Cooler Master u can get a casing with huge space starting from 4k..!!

Thanks @forhad_zaman. You're absolute right about the PSU price. Sorry I got it wrong. They carry a Corsair VS450 at Tk 5000. I was hoping to find a modular one though.

I don't need a GPU now because I use a WDTV Live Hub to watch movies. Maybe in the future I might get a GPU if I get back into computer gaming or watching HD content from PC.

Where can I get the Corsair Vengeance 8GB? CM casing I think I can find in Binary Logic.

the purpose is not a workstation pc or not a gaming, this are uncommon in bg lol anyway i would say take i3 3220 instead i5 as the purpose is storage that will save you 5-6k extra so cost will be 10k

dont take a fancy motherboard b75 d3h v1.1 is the best choice will cost you 7.2k

rams umm i think 4gb should be enough 1600bus wont take you more than 2k

take a gpu that will be handy in hd video playback and lite gaming sapphire 6670 should be ok at 7k

psu corsair 450w is ok at 5k

now comes the hdd take the 3tb wdd at 16k

and for ssd you can take intel the 128gb ssd at 10k-12k from binary logic

    casing tt gs 2 3.8k

so total cost for everything is 60-62k

Thanks blood stain child and dipanzan. I do my my gaming on PS3 and 360 (when time permits) Your suggestions are great. I am now thinking whether spending that much on a SSD would be a smart choice. Investing on even a 2 TB hdd would be more wise.

Thats absolutely right dipanzan. I am primarily checking the number of sata connectors in the spec sheets of the motherboards.

Don't see why he'd even need 4GB RAM just to download. Focus on power efficiency then anything else since that will make the most difference for you.

Nothing above an i3 and a 450W PSU (if you current one works fine then keep it), maybe a discrete GPU for enhanced movie playback if you do watch them on your PC. You definitely do not need an SSD since that storage is what you're looking for.

Ok no SSD. To be honest, I wanted a small SSD (60 or 64 gb) to install the OS and a few other programs and leave it at that. So now even a 160 gb hdd (if available) for OS would do at Tk 1,500.

What is the best i3 available in BD?

I can do with a cheaper motherboard but with enough sata ports and at least 4 USB ports at the back. Any suggestions welcome.

This is my current PSU. Here's a link to a page with details. 4 sata connectors means 4 HDD max? I'm unsure if its outdated or not.

Just for downloading i5-3470 or even i3 seems waste. buy only one or some hdd 6-10k. Thats enough.

I3 3220 would be best in my opinion..
I guess the Gigabyte B75 D3V has 6 SATA ports and 8USB ports...so u can go for that at 6.5k from Ryans..
