Default PLAYSTATION 4 - News & Discussion Thread

    PlayStation 4 Specs:
    Single chip custom processor
    8 Jaguar cores x86 CPU
    1.84 Teraflops GPU (18CU)

    • Sony has ditched Cell. The PlayStation 4's main processor is a single-chip custom processor, a x86-64 AMD "Jaguar" with eight cores. A second chip is dedicated to managing uploads and downloads.
    • The GPU is a similarly impressive AMD next-gen Radeon-based graphics engine that can make 1.84 trillion calculations a second.
    • Brace yourself - the PS3 packs a borderline improbable 8GB of GDDR5 memory! If you're reading this in 2016, that's still really, really fast!
    • As well as a built-in hard drive (the size is yet to be confirmed), the PS4 also features a 6x speed Blu-Ray drive (compared to the PS3's 2x speed one), an 8x speed DVD drive and USB 3.0 for high-speed transfer.

    Console Features:

    • Sony says the hardware has been designed with developers' needs in mind, a stark contrast to the early days of the PS3 and the claims that it was notoriously hard to develop for.
    • A new suspend mode lets you "switch off" the PS4 and store the game's current state in its memory. When you return to the system later and press the power button, the game will instantly carry on where it left off, with no need to boot the system and load the game.
    • The new PlayStation 4 menu screen will let you see what your friends are doing, while also recommending games, TV shows, movies and music to you. These recommendations will be specific ones unique to you, based on your previous downloads. For example, if you've spent a lot of time playing FIFA 14, it'll recommend the FIFA 15 demo when it's available.
    • Much like the Wii U, the PS4 can run multiple apps at once. While playing a game, you can load a web browser to check out walkthroughs or do some online reconnaissance.
    • PlayStation 4 games will be playable on Vita via Wi-Fi using Remote Play. It's not yet clear whether this applies to every single game or whether it's a game-by-game option that developers will need to activate, as is the case for PS3. All Sony has said so far is that "your favourite PS4 games" will feature Remote Play.
    • The PlayStation App is a new app that Sony will be releasing on iOS and Android devices, allowing you to use your smartphone or tablet as a second screen that acts as a map or lets you see how a friend is doing in that particular section of the game. It's a similar idea to Microsoft's SmartGlass and, of course, the Wii U GamePad.
    • It has been confirmed that the PS4 will NOT block pre-owned games.

    Network Features:

    • Digital titles purchased from the PlayStation Store can be played as they download. The system will download the first part of the game so you can start playing it quickly, then continue to download the rest of the game's assets in the background as you play. This also implies there will no longer be a need to install games as with the PS3.
    • While Sony isn't completely blocking anonymous usernames, it does want to let people play online with their real names, integrating their gaming with social networks such as Facebook.
    • Gaikai technology will let you instantly try out sections of any game on the PlayStation Store. While the way in which this happens isn't yet clear, it's likely it will come in the form of timed streaming demos, much like the OnLive console offers.
    • You can broadcast a live stream of your gameplay via Ustream, so that other gamers can see your progress.
    • If you're stuck in a game you can ask your friends to help you. This can either come in the form of text comments that will appear on the screen like notifications, or they can actually take over the game's controls and beat a section of the game for you.
    • The PlayStation 4 can be updated while the console is switched off, potentially putting an end to the dreaded lengthy firmware updates that annoyed PS3 owners.
    • The system does NOT require an always-online connection.

    DualShock 4 (Controller) Features:

    • The controller features a touch pad on the front, similar to the rear touch pad on the PlayStation Vita. This is a capacitive touch pad (much like that on a phone), supporting two touches at once. This may be useful for mouse-like in control in games such as Diablo III (though it hasn't yet been confirmed if it'll use that control method).
    • A new "SHARE" button lets you add screenshots and gameplay footage to your Facebook feed. It's not yet clear how long captured videos can last.
    • An LED Light Bar, similar to the LED ball on the PlayStation Move, sits along the top of the DualShock 4. Much like the Move, it can change colour for various needs (player indicators, damage indicators etc). It can also be used for Move-like controls (see the PlayStation 4 Eye section below).
    • The Start and Select buttons have been scrapped in favour of a single Options button.
    • The controller's built-in speaker will let you hear additional sounds much like the Wii U GamePad. Alternatively, there's also a headphone jack which lets you hear these sounds in greater detail as well as friends' voices during chat.
    • Speaking of chat, the PS4 will come with a mono headset provided.
    • There's a new built-in sensor inside the pad which Sony promises will enable "highly sensitive motion control". Presumably this means the Sixaxis motion control has been improved.
    • The controller's existing buttons - most notably the dual analogue sticks and L2 and R2 buttons - have been redesigned in accordance with developers' wishes (and presumably those of the vocal gaming community).

    PlayStation 4 Eye (Screenshot):

    • The new PlayStation 4 Eye new camera, expected to be bundled with the system, appears to be Sony's answer to Kinect (which, in a sense, was Microsoft's response to the first EyeToy). It features two high-sensitivity 1280x800 cameras with wide-angle lenses and 85-degree diagonal angle views which, according to Sony, "can recognise the depth of space precisely".
    • Sony claims the camera can "cut out the image of the player from the background" or track their distance from the TV, allowing players to move their bodies to play. Players can also sign in with facial recognition.
    • The PlayStation 4 Eye also includes four microphones, allowing it to accurately detect sound and where it originated from.
    • Much like the previous Eye worked with the PlayStation Move, the new Eye tracks the LED Light Bar on the front of the DualShock 4 controller (like a more accurate Wii sensor bar), allowing for Move-style controls. With every PS4 owner potentially having Move-like controls instead of it being optional, this could have interesting connotations for upcoming games.

PS4: PlayStation Meeting 2013 heralds big news from Sony

“Just what will Sony announce at PlayStation Meeting 2013?” is a question almost nobody is asking, because we’re all getting short odds on the answer being “PlayStation 4″.

Sony has announced a big reveal coming 6:00PM PST on February 20. You can sign up for updates via a teaser page.

The last PlayStation Meeting was called to announce the Vita, so if this one’s not the next PlayStation console, it’s going to have to be something really spectacular.

Next-generation hardware announced from Sony and Microsoft are expected this year. Although Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai told press Microsoft could make the first move, sources said Sony wanted to beat Microsoft to the punch, something back up by independent rumours.

The firm has been struggling with financial issues and may need the boost of a new hardware announce to retain stockholder faith. Some sources have suggested the new consoles might ship before the holiday season this year, but bear in mind Sony announced the Vita almost a full year before its launch.

Sony released a teaser trailer to go with the announcement, which is full of abstract shapes. Feel free to speculate on what they might mean and express your disdain for the female sigh at the end.

Wall Street Journal: This is PS4 reveal

Sony Corp. is planning to unveil its next-generation home video-game console during a February event, showing off a successor to its current PlayStation 3 system.

The Japanese electronics giant Thursday unveiled plans for a special PlayStation-themed event set for Feb. 20, teasing fans to "see the future" at the event. People familiar with the matter have said the new device will make its debut there, beating Microsoft Corp. to the punch in announcing its own next-generation game machine.

Sony's device will be released later this year, these people said, and will spar against Microsoft's own machine, which is also expected ...

    PlayStation 4 revealed

Development sources with working knowledge of both next generation consoles have told us that PlayStation 4 will be more powerful than the next Xbox, will ship with a redesigned controller and launch by the end of the year in Japan and the US. PlayStation 4’s European launch will follow in early 2014.

Sony is set to reveal its next PlayStation on Wednesday February 20th at an event dubbed ‘see the future’. Sony Computer Entertainment released a teaser video last night to announce the event. Below, our sources revealed what to expect from PlayStation 4.

    The controller
Sources close to the hardware have revealed to us that PS4 will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing DualShock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons. The tech is based on Vita’s rear touchpad, and is similarly responsive in use.

A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

    The launch
We’re told that PlayStation 4 will launch in Japan and the US by Christmas, with a Euro rollout following in early 2014, the delay attributed to the complexities involved in European distribution. Alongside the console, Sony will also introduce a new, improved iteration of its PlayStation Eye peripheral, which remains compatible with the PlayStation Move controller. Move will be available at launch, but it’s not clear yet whether it will be bundled with the hardware.

    The specifiation
Sony has already earned an enormous amount of goodwill among studios working with PS4 development hardware. Privately, Sony representatives have conceded that the company made a mistake in creating such esoteric architecture for PS3, and its strategy for PS4 gives developers more opportunities this time around, notably because the hardware is much more PC-like in its makeup than PS3.

We have confirmed with sources that recently leaked tech specs are accurate. Though Durango devkits offer 8GB of DDR3 RAM, compared to Orbis’s 4GB, Sony’s GDDR5 solution is capable of moving data at 176 gigabytes per second, which should eliminate the sort of bottlenecks that hampered PS3 game performance. Importantly, we’ve learned that Sony has told developers that it is pushing for the final PS4 RAM to match up to Microsoft’s 8GB.

Both platforms are driven by eight-core AMD CPUs clocked at 1.6GHz, with Microsoft opting for a D3D11.x GPU from an unknown source and Sony utilising a more capable solution in AMD’s ‘R10XX’ architecture, alongside the so-called ‘Liverpool’ system-on-chip.

It’s clear Sony has designed a system that, on paper, outperforms Microsoft’s next Xbox. One source familiar with both platforms tells us that in real terms Sony’s console is “slightly more powerful” and “very simple to work with”.

Ultimately, the performance differences between the two consoles will have as much bearing on multiplatform releases as the differences between PS3 and 360 – very little – but Sony will be expecting big-budget firstparty releases such as the PS4 Uncharted sequel to demonstrate its console’s superiority.

PS4 rumour: next-gen racer & Killzone studio projects to debut February 20th

PS4 rumours are heating up, and recent rumblings suggest that a next-gen racer and the new project from Killzone studio Guerilla Games will debut at Sony’s ‘PlayStation Meeting’ event on February 20th.

This fresh rumour comes from STFUandPlay, and I know what we’re thinking – ‘who are they exactly?’ It doesn’t matter too much as a Polygon author using his NeoGAF handle ‘Aegies’ has gone on record to say that the rumour is true to his knowledge.

To be clear, that’s not the sort of thing a game writer does unless they’re damn sure.

So, the rumour in full then, is that Ged Talbot – ex-Bizarre Creations lead designer on Blur and several Project Gotham titles – has been hired by Motorstorm team Evolution Studios, along with other former employees.

They’re working on a next-gen racer for PS4 that was at one point pitched as a Gran Turismo title, although Sony Japan decided against the move for some reason. If true, this is the second next-gen racer in the works for Sony’s new console.

The other racer is rumoured to be in development at Ivory Tower, a studio comprised of ex-Eden Games staff. It’s said to be a spiritual successor to Test Drive Unlimited.

Also, Killzone studio Guerilla Games is said to be revealing its PS4 project at the event as well.

The PlayStation Meeting event kicks off February 20th in New York City. We have everything you need to know about PS4 rumours surrounding the event here.

Rumor: first PS4 controller & dev kit image leak: touchpad, speaker & Move built in

Is this the first image of a PS4 controller? If it is then that’s a PlayStation 4 development kit in the background as well. The redesigned DualShock clearly shows the oft rumored touchpad and, more interestingly, what looks like a speaker/mic grill and Move integration.
    First PS4 controller photo

Sony have supposedly been trying several variations of a new Dualshock design incorporating a touchpad built from Vita’s rear trackpad, but this is the first hint the controller could include a speaker or microphone. The blue panel on the top could also be a light to incorporate Move controls into the PS4 controller as suggested in a previous patent. There’s also something odd going on with the handles. Either it’s a strange angle or there’s a more sculpted shape to the grips.
If that is a PS4 dev kit behind it then don’t panic that next gen comes in a foot square aluminum box. Early hardware isn’t representative, just a thing to put all the magic in. The first PS2 dev kits were big silver boxes as well.

Both Kotaku and IGN have apparently corroborated reports from other sources that this is the real deal but an early prototype, so potentially not the final shape.
    Thanks Destructoid, Kotaku, IGN

The PlayStation 4, as Discussed in the early moments of Sony's event, has a "supercharged PC architecture" with an X86 CPU, "enhanced PC GPU" (unspecified as of yet) with GDDR5, 8GB of memory, and traditional hard drive storage.

i am happy. The gpu seems to be between Radeon 7870 & 7850 as anandtech said. But lets wait for the actual specifications & also the response from Microsoft.

They did not show the console though and as expected the increase in the level of detail is not as high compared to PS2 and PS3. And why are they still sticking to 32-bit CPU?
