Default Phenom II X4 940 vs. the QX 9770 vs. the Core i7 965

THE UNQUESTIONABLE scoop of the day is at OCW. The site has a comparison review of the Phenom II X4 940 vs. the QX 9770 vs. the Core i7 940. The tests show the Phenom II to be very competent and, above all, it doesn't break the bank. In most games it'll equal the Core i7 940, but trail the QX 9770. Overclocking is also very good, as you can get some good overclocks (~800MHz) on air with this Phenom II. Considering it costs half of what costs the i7 and a quarter of a QX 9770, things might be looking up for AMD... we can 'ardly wait for those DDR3 versions of the Phenom II.

    Conclusion

As we can see from the benchmarks, the AMD Phenom II X4 940 seems like a pretty OK processor for pairing up with the ASRock AOD790GX/128M mainboard. In terms of cost/performance ratio, it is definitely more worth your penny than getting a Core i7 which is faster. In fact, the QX9770 compared is not widely available and cost a bomb.

Of course, you might argue that you could overclock a Intel Quad Core processor to 3GHz. There is no doubt you can do that. IN this test, we are interested in default CLK comparisons, comparing the higher end processors at default clocks.

The AMD Phenom II X4 overclocks by 26% which is a 800MHz from the default 3GHz on AIR COOL. It is reported that this processor can do 6GHz under LN2. Of course, that remains a not practical solution as no one will want to place a LN2 tank at home and run the system for 1 hr per tank other than competing for world records.

In conclusion, this processor should be able to take good advantage of the ASRock AOD790GX/128M as this board opens a lot more opportunities than just using the embedded graphics. You can use Hybrid or even run a proper CrossFire solution on it with 2 ATI cards.
Wat amazed me was Phenom II X4 beat Core i7 in a single benchmark with DDR2 ram!! Its was not by a huge margin.. but still!! The Phenom is soo cheap.

Its gud for BD users where u can use this processor in OLD motherboards with just a BIOS update. Keep it up AMD!

Intel already said that you need DDR3 for Core i7 processors, so beating it in DDR2 tests isnt really a feat.

@Aayman,Exactly my point. If amd beats it with ddr3,then the competition could be fair.I7,A processor designed for ddr3 and Phenom which is for ddr2 having a competition and then stating that amd performed better isn't fair.Beat it with ddr3 or go crawl into whtever place u came from Amd.The phenom had unfair advantages.

R u guys thinkin that core i7 was using ddr2?

It was amd using ddr2 beat core i7 with ddr3 in a benchmark!

Its amd processers that can use both ddr2 or ddr3 ram.

why dont you guys (except giddy) read the review properly, and not comment if you have no clue. Core i7 only supports DDR3 which it is using, and the phenom II is using DDR2 so it has a disadvantage

Phenom with DDR3 is coming up in february 2008 in the AM3 socket which will give it a further 5% performance boost

    also, check this: 6+ Ghz

It is turning out to be a BEAST when it comes to overclocking, my buddies report 4+ ghz on air, and around 4.5 on water. 6+ on LN2. brilliant. these people broke the NDA, official reviews are out on friday i think when the NDA lifts

look guys, if AMD comes up with something good, even the intel guys will benefit from more competition and lower prices, so so matter how much you love intel, it will benefit you directly.

Reading this, I thought he was talking about Core i7 being benchmarked with DDR2 ram. I am not into this processor stuff, which is why I read user comments but I specifically remember Intel mentioning Core i7 needing DDR3, thus my comment.

    Note 1: ``The system used 2x1GB DDR2-1066 memory running at CAS 5, 7-7-24, 2T``
[email protected] is not good for ddr2 1066
    . it should be 4-4-4-12 or 5-5-5-15.

    Note 2: Phenom using Dual Channel DDR2 & Intel i7 using ??? Channel DDR3.
as far as i know i7 (X58 mobo) usages Tripple Channel DDR3.

    So The comparison between
Phenom II X4 940 and the Core i7 940 is not fair in the OCW article.

LOLz AMD had disadvantages. And dont forget intel has some kind of overclocking tech which will automatically overclock the processor when needed. The tech is gud..., but when it comes to benchmark Core i7 will have advantages bcuz of that auto overclock.

Seriously the Core i7 940 ~ 3Ghz is an awsome product. Its Also cost $500 & along with a new mobo it will cost u another $150

The Phenom II is a Gr8 product for its price. Its just around $250 and its multiplier is unlocked. & u can use it with an old mobo. AMD's new mobo r cheap anyway. I like the 780G chipset.

6+ on LN2. brilliant. these people broke the NDA, official reviews are out on friday i think when the NDA lifts

look guys, if AMD comes up with something good, even the intel guys will benefit from more competition and lower prices, so so matter how much you love intel, it will benefit you directly.
february 2008??? bro did u mean february 2009???
