Default Microsoft and Nokia come together to reveal new Nokia Lumia 820 and Nokia Lumia 920 running Windows Phone 8

Nokia and Microsoft came together today to announce the new line of Nokia Lumia phones. The new line includes the Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 and will run Windows Phone 8.

Nokia took great pains to stress the sophistication of the phone’s camera for both pictures and video.

In addition, the Lumias will provide Nokia PureMotion HD+, Offline maps, free voice navigation, indoor mapping and augmented reality.

For processing power, the phones will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor which in their words is “Up to 30 percent more battery efficient than quad-core alternatives.”

The Nokia Lumia 920 comes with built-in wireless charging.

For the actual charging stations, Nokia has alliances Fatboy (among others). They are the makers of the Fatboy recharge pillow.

Nokia has built relationships with Virgin Airlines and The Coffee to allow for wireless charging on planes and in coffee shops. I’m sure we will hear more about those relationships in detail in the future.

Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore also spoke about Windows Phone 8.

He stressed that Microsoft had over 100,000 Windows Phone applications and that Windows Phone 8 will run Windows Phone 7 applications.

Apart from the standard Windows Phone 8 demo, there were some new revelations. There is a screenshot feature in Windows Phone 8. The Home button and power activates the screenshots feature.

He took a screenshot during the demo and posted it to Twitter (below)

Also of import, Windows Phone 8′s ability to do a full resolution auto upload of photos to SkyDrive. he took photos with the phone and demonstrated that they were visible in SkyDrive.

    Joe’s quote:
“WIndows Phone 8 and the new Lumia 920 were developed side-by-side with the goal of building a better smartphone experience.”

Kevin Shields from Nokia also discussed the new Nokia 920 and it’s case strength (it’s really strong). he said the resolution is WXGA, higher than 720p.

Nokia have also included a technology called super sensitive touch – it allows people wearing gloves to use the screen. This was demoed as well.

More about wireless charging, they showed the new JPL powerup boombox. It allows for wireless charging as well as wireless music play.

The Lumia 920 also comes with integrated NFC.

They also showed “Smart Shoot” – a new technology that enables you to remove moving unwanted objects from your view before you take the photograph.

They showed “Cinemagraph” which allows you to modify pictures AFTER they are taken to add motion.

Then they moved on to the Lumia 820. 4.3 inch display.

Here are pertinent images from today

I feel like it's more of a gimmick. You just have to place the phone on the charging mat instead of plugging it in, and inductive chargers are not exactly cheap...

The company said the devices will come with a wireless charging pad, allowing the device to sit on top of it to charge. The Lumia 920 features a powerful 2000mAh battery with integrated Qi wireless charging, while the Lumia 820 touts a 1650mAh battery with Qi wireless charging. Qi is the industry’s wireless charging standard that enables phone owners to place their device on a compatible charger to receive a power boost.

Shathe charging plate dibe? As an included accessory? Damn those guys are trying hard! Tar poreo, it's not as secure as plugging a cable in, e.g. you can't use it if you take your phone to bed and leave it charging overnight - you might knock the phone off the mat. But I'll admit, the wow factor of wireless charging is certainly there.

    Nokia apology:

    http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/...pology-is-due/
It is not like it doesn't support cable charging. Wireless charging is a bonus.

See this video and you'll understand the benefit. Your phone connects and charges at the same time without any cable hassle.

As for the apology, while it is true they "simulated" the video/images quite a bit (just like apple), their technology actually works.

Nokia photo challenge with the Lumia 920 and PureView camera

Nokia had an area setup to challenge your phone's camera against their Lumia 920. http://www.wpcentral.com/nokia-takes-photo-challengers-against-lumia-920-pureview

    - - - Updated - - -

Last night during Nokia’s par-tay we managed to check out their little photo challenge area. In short, they literally had a cubby hole in a brick wall where you could mosey on up with your smartphone, snap a pic and then Nokia would do the same with the Lumia 920.

Of course the Lumia 920 is better positioned to win such a contest, after all it has everything: lens stabilization, a larger BSI sensor, F/2.0 aperture and some funky Nokia algorithms to top it all off. And indeed, challenge after challenge we saw the 920 crush any phone that attempted the feat—iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S3—all were smoked.

The Lumia 920's camera simply overpowers the Galaxy S3's

The object was a flower in a vase tucked in a little dark corner. To say it as poorly lit is an understatement. Honestly, we would never even attempt to photograph what they were doing with the 920 as you could barely see it with your own eyes. And let’s make no mistake—as far as we could tell, this was not rigged. Nokia snapped the photo each and every time and we were allowed to view the images to verify (ironically, we couldn’t challenge the Lumia 900 as Nokia probably does not want to compete against themselves too publicly).

Likewise with video stabilization as the Nokia employee held up the phone above his head and would shoot 5 to 10 seconds of video. Sure, this works on any camera but on the 920, the video was solid and didn’t budge. It did look like it was mounted on a tripod instead of being handheld.

Don’t get us wrong—we want to see the “final” product like everyone else and we’ll surely put it through its paces between George and myself. But we noticed some folks are calling this ‘vaporware’—sorry friends, but it is anything but vaporware, faked or being over-sold to you. This kind of camera can truly change the level and quality of photos you’ll be taking in 8 weeks’ time and we can’t wait to see 'em.

Watch the video above and let us know your thoughts.

I don't think unlocked ones will be less than $600

The Nokia Lumia 920 (in foreground) and the Nokia Lumia 820

Switzerland is known for its neutrality, although we wonder if that extends to smartphones as well. Meanwhile, mobile operator Digitec Switzerland has already started taking pre-orders for Windows Phone 8 models. Nokia's top-shelf model, the Nokia Lumia 920 can be reserved for CHF 749 ($793 USD) and the Nokia Lumia 820 can be pre-ordered for CHF 639 ($687 USD). Delivery dates for the pair are listed as being in mid-November and both models can be pre-ordered in your choice of yellow, red, black or white. The carrier is also listing the 16GB model of the Samsung ATIV S for CHF699 ($740 USD). No delivery date is listed for the Samsung model. The handsets will be available with subsidized pricing for Orange, Sunrise and Swisscom.

Additionally, the same trio of Windows Phone 8 models is available for pre-order in the Czech Republic. At Smarty.cz, the Nokia Lumia 920 can be reserved for 14,995 CZK ($807 USD). The Nokia Lumia 820 can be pre-ordered for 12,495 CZK ($651). Lastly, you can pre-order the Samsung ATIV S for $15,495 CZK ($807 USD). No shipping date is listed.

Nokia reaffirms WP 7.8 support for existing Lumia handsets, announces handful of features

Nokia's legacy Lumia devices won't be graced with Windows Phone 8, but the company has reaffirmed its support for keeping them fresh with version 7.8 of Microsoft's handset OS. In addition to a revamped start screen, the introduction of City Lens and other expected perks, Espoo is tossing in a few extras. Among the new additions are the Cinemagraph GIF creator, a ringtone maker app, updates to Smart Group Shot and Bluetooth support for both file transfers and the firm's Contact Share application. Yearning to load up your smartphone with the raft of new features? Elop and Co. say the upgrades will be be rolled out in phases for the Lumia 610, 710, 800 and 900 models, but promise more details when their ETAs close in.
