    Thumbs up Black Mesa

    Developer(s) Black Mesa Modification Team
    Series Half-Life
    Engine Source
    Platform(s) Microsoft Windows
    Release date(s) September 14, 2012

Black Mesa (previously known as Black Mesa: Source) is a third-party total conversion modification currently in development for Valve Corporation's Source engine. The stated goal of the project is to recreate Valve's critically acclaimed 1998 video game Half-Life using the more advanced capabilities of the Source engine. The 40-person volunteer development team says they hope to create a more engrossing in-game world with more varied, complex environments and more challenging, realistic gameplay.
During its eight years in development, Black Mesa has been featured in several video game publications and received direct attention from Valve. Due to its long development time the modification has recently become notable for its delays, and dwindling updates on the status of its completion. The delays led to Wired Magazine awarding Black Mesa high spots on their Vaporware Of The Year list in 2009, and again in 2010. The developers plan to release the game as a free download when completed. On June 10, 2012 the Black Mesa development team announced that new "media" would be released once their Facebook page reached 20,000 likes. This goal was reached on June 11, 2012 when 8 new screenshots were released, along with an announcement of the start of a "social-media campaign" towards their first release. On September 2, 2012, project leader cman2k announced that the first Black Mesa release will take place on September 14, 2012.

Aside from the last few seconds the graphics dont look that different from Half-Life and much worse than Half-Life 2, maybe more variation in character models. But its a voluntary project so cant nitpick I guess...

Black Mesa Source: aliens revealed in new screens

Black Mesa Source is finally out this Friday, and the team has released some new screens into the wild, showing more of the game’s alien menace.

The team also recently stated that Half-Life’s Xen sections will be omitted and will receive their own release as a standalone game.

But that Xen part was so cool & heart of the game. Stripping it out is a bad move.

They are not ripping it out, they're making a stand alone game with that.

Black Mesa Source now available & it's Free

You don't have to wait for Steam to publish Greenlight winner Black Mesa Source, the Half Life 2-based recreation of Half Life. The team has released the Half Life 2 total conversion for free through its own website.
So if the game's out and free, why does it need to be on Steam? The developers explain on the Greenlight page: "When we are on Steam we'll be able to reach more players and make installation and future updates easy for everyone!" Making updates more convenient is always a noble goal.

Anyone playing this out? I've played it for a bit, and in certainly evokes the nostalgic feeling. I've not finished Half-life properly. Just ran through the levels using god mode, since it felt too difficult to me at those days. Time to give its proper treatment.
The graphics, while certainly not as good as good Half-Life 2, its definitely a huge leap from a 1999 game and is easily playable without putting strain on the eyes. Also the controls feels lot more smoother this time.

You need to install steam and from the tools section install Source SDK 2007. Then install Black Mesa, restart Steam and it will be in your steam library.

Its good, actually too good. I even prefer HL1 to HL2. HL1 is more innovative (don't argue with me. If u don't believe me play HL1 again) as well as more action oriented than HL2. From start to finish not a single boring moment unlike HL2's slow initial hours. Xen part is the wirdest & one of the coolest moment in gaming history but sadly its not in the remake. Last but not the least you will be amazed at human enemy A.I - how they search for covers, shoot & dodge.
