    Thumbs up Dead Island: Riptide

Dead Island Riptide is a spin-off of the original zombie resort simulator. Publisher Deep Silver is very clear to point out it is not a sequel, so think more Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood or Halo 3: ODST. Riptide was announced this summer, but now we have some more details.

The game will return the focus to close combat from the latter gunplay found in Dead Island, with a new weather system and upgrades to the engine of the first game. The weather system will now include flooding and lovely trips down zombie infested rivers on little boats. There are also forts that need to be reinforced and barricaded.

Players will be able to import their character stats from the previous game, but the new game takes place in a new location. It's the same archipelago, but not the same island. The game will launch in 2013.

Dead Island: Riptide First Look Preview – A Watery Grave

Zombies are a popular theme nowadays (unless you’re the Cookie Monster that is) and the first Dead Island game successfully mixed a blend of first person combat, RPG elements and classic zombie slaying. So it probably came as no surprise when a sequel was inevitably announced, giving players another chance to indulge in some undead carnage. To find out what was under the hood this time around we sat down with the developers and were presented with all the new tweaks and additions. Be prepared for a few spoilers if you haven’t yet played the first title.

Taking place straight after the first game Dead Island: Riptide picks up where we left off according to the developers, “You will learn what happened to your guys after they flew off in a helicopter at the end of the first game.” Not long after that something happens, the chopper goes down and, wouldn’t you know it you’re stranded on an island that just so happens to have a bit of a zombie problem. Not exactly the most novel of openings but at least it gives us another chance to decapitate zombies left, right and centre. You can expect to see the same posse from first time around, plus a mysterious new military character that joins you along the way. In fact the main changes to the game actually come through an increased use of water mechanics and a shift in terms of combat.

    Attachment 25038

The Riptide moniker is not just a clever name either, as the developers have added an increased emphasis on water and boating. The island has been flooded by a tropical monsoon which can lead to our heroes being trapped in certain spots without any means of escape, the shifting currents proving to be just one more obstacle in your path to safety. Luckily you can also swipe and control a wide variety of boats to zip around the various water channels and by ways of the local area. Packing them with your teammates you can use your boat to smash aside zombies and fend off swarms of your watery foes, four teammates can also nimbly dodge around the boat to whack any potential insurgents. It’s a fun addition to the rather limited vehicular combat of the first game and one that should throw up a few more exciting opportunities
    as the game progresses.

In terms of combat the developers were keen to address the fact that guns were so underwhelming, for lack of a better word, in the first title. Players who chose to specialise in firearms got the raw end of the deal as guns and ammo were fairly scarce, and the damage they did was a fraction of that available to some of the most powerful melee weapons. This time around though, guns will be more useful and you’ll be able to find a much wider variety of them from the get go. You can also salvage much more powerful gear, like gatling guns and the like, from broken down vehicles and crashed choppers. That’s not to say that you won’t have a range of other weapons too of course, with a whole host of new melee items, blueprints and explosives to choose from meaning that you can always be fully equipped. You can also recruit military backup as you progress, but if you don’t take care of them correctly it might mean a few extra zombies gnawing at your heels.

    Attachment 25039

Of course what good is all of that gear if you never get to use it? “The problem when you play an RPG is that you always get to collect all this cool stuff,” says the Techland team, “But then you finish the game and you still have an inventory full of items that you never got to use.” Instead of making players hoard items the team instead wants them to find situations to use as many as possible, hence a new fortification and defense system. At key stages of the game the player can help out follow survivors by tooling up, setting up defenses such as fences, gun turrets and floating mines. Seeing it all in action, it’s hard not to be impressed as floating trip mines explode to whittle down the onrushing horde, while your team can man hastily set up turrets to tear apart any stragglers. Of course, the sheer amount of zombies means that some will start tearing down your defences in short order leading to some hasty melee combat. It’s like watching a well crafted horde mode within the main game itself, and should lead to some memorable set pieces especially when played in co-op.

    Attachment 25040

Luckily for old players you can also import your previously saved characters into the new game for a spot of knock down, drag out action and there will be plenty of new leveling to do and loot to find along the way. They have also made the co-op system a bit fairer as well, so that enemies will level according to each individual player rather than just being tied in with the host as used to be the case. This means that you can now have a mix of veterans and newcomers which should lead to a lot more co-op action considering how hard it could be to successfully find a team last time out.

It’s clear though that the tweaks here are fairly minor, and are mainly ones that seek to address some of the main criticisms leveled at the original. That’s not necessarily a bad thing as there was plenty to enjoy in Dead Island but there is also a risk that it could be more of the same. The graphics are slightly more polished and there are certainly a few new foes, but there is still a very familiar look and feel in comparison to the last game. Hopefully the new emphasis on NPC interactions, water based travel and high octane defense missions should add that little something extra to Dead Island: Riptide, but otherwise this is a subtle spin on the formula rather than a complete overhaul.

Expect to see Dead Island Riptide clawing its way out of a muddy sinkhole when it lands (or rather crash lands) in 2013.

You should, the game was pretty difficult but fun somehow.Took me about more than 20hrs but made it easier thanks to that button. Was more like cheating then again the developers were the ones who put it there in the first place.

Dead Island: Riptide introduces brawler John Morgan

Dead Island: Riptide will add a fisticuffs-based character to the zombie survival simulator. John Morgan is a master of hand-to-hand combat and can be played from the beginning of Riptide, along with the four members of the original game's cast. We've confirmed co-op play is still set to four players, so don't take this as a sign of party of five antics.

According to publisher Deep Silver, Morgan was "inspired by some very popular fan mods" for the original game, which we wanted to know more about.

"So one thing we really like about our community is that they did so many crazy mods for Dead Island on PC. One of the mods was an awesome Fist of the North Star thing and a dude made a hilarious video out of it," a representative for Deep Silver told us, digging up the YouTube we've placed after the break. "Obviously, our character is not exactly like this, but since people liked this mod so much, it made us think about doing a hand-to-hand combat character."

Dead Island Riptide Gun Play Gets Upgraded, Dynamic Weather System Added

( Dead Island Riptide creative producer Anthony Cardahi talks about some of the sequel's new features... )

    Attachment 28348

Dead Island's sequel, Dead Island Riptide, is not only set to right some of the game's misdeeds, but it also aims to bring in a few new gameplay additions, too.

In an interview with OPM UK, Dead Island Riptide creative producer Anthony Cardahi talks about some of the new features and fixes fans can expect in their second romp in Dead Island.

First off, Cardahi talks about Dead Island's "unpredictable" gun play. Cardahi notes that in the first game, "The ranged combat in the original was only pushed during the middle and latter stages of the game, and ammo was really sparse," He then adds, "As such, most of the tweaking and balance time was focused on the melee combat and not so much on the shooting."

Cardahi admits, "It was a great hassle to get any kind of efficient headshot in the first game," but that now they're putting the ranged weapons and lot of ammo into the early stages of the game. Because of this new shooting mechanic, "headshots are now really devastating. You can also improve and upgrade the guns to the same level as melee weapons. Guns now represent a completely viable combat choice that you can maintain throughout the game."

In addition to the upgraded shooting mechanics, Cardahi reveals that there's a new "dynamic weather system" in the game and this allows them to "play around with the atmosphere of the game a lot more thanks to different lighting systems, from sunny blue skies to dark, torrential rains storms that will obscure your visibility."

While Dead Island didn't manage to bring in the same level of quality as its highly-acclaimed initial trailer. it was still a solid zombie romp that managed to rope in a lot of players to try and survive in "Dead Island." Can the sequel fare better? For the sake of zombie fans everywhere, let's hope it does.

Did you like the first Dead Island? What were your main complaints against it and what do you want to see the sequel improve on?

Dead Island Riptide is set for release on April 23, 2013 for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Dead Island Riptide got Metacritic score 66/100 ... mixed or average reviews mostly ... based on 17 Critics review. Some interesting reviews:

    Gamespot- 40/100

Dead Island: Riptide might look like an idyllic zombie-fest, but it's little more than a frustrating mess of half-baked ideas and repetitive combat.

    The Good
    Cool blood effects and dismemberments.

    The Bad
    Boring, repetitive missions.
    Weak voice acting and dialogue.
    Soulless, irritating characters Frustrating combat.

    IGN- 72/100

Rather than fix the graphics and the performance problems that plagued the original two years ago, Techland slightly modified the setting and delivered a new character and more content. It’s a fun time, but there are no surprises or killer new features to make it an impressive package.

    Eurogamer - 60/100

While bugs may have been the bane of Dead Island, the underlying shabbiness of everything else still overwhelms Riptide. For as long as you don't notice the fundamental flaws in game systems and for as long as you can put up with the instantly forgettable story and mission objectives, this is a game where you can have a lot of fun improvising your way through hordes of the undead. Unfortunately, the game lasts twice as long as my patience for the duff bits held out.

    GameFront - 65/100
There’s a B movie in Dead Island: Riptide that entertains in that laughable B-movie sort of way: that “don’t take it so seriously, characters so bad they’re good, what ridiculous thing might happen next” sort of way. But like the B horror genre itself, Riptide can’t stand on that appeal forever. Eventually, the endless zombie head-crushing just isn’t entertaining anymore.

    GamesRadar - 80/100
Its addicting zombie-slaying action, dozens of interesting weapons, and immersive qualities far outweigh its dull story and occasional technical hiccups, the latter of which pale in comparison to those of the original. This outshines its predecessor in almost every conceivable way--and once it sinks its teeth into your time, Riptide is a hard game to put down.
