Paul Steed, the man behind the "Crackwhore" female model for Quake II has died. One of the games industry's first cutting-edge low-poly 3D modelers, he will be sorely missed by his many friends still working in gaming.

Steed started in the industry back in the early 90s, when he answered an ad for a "fantasy artist" and found himself working on the Strike Commander series for Origin Systems and EA. He later moved on to id Software and the Quake series, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Marc Ecko's Getting Up, Driver: Parallel Lines, Neverwinter Nights 2 and - most recently - Sorcery, for Sony.Tributes have started flowing from games industry personalities around the web, including Mark Rein from Epic Games, who tweets:

Very sad news about Paul Steed. He was a great guy and always fun to be around.

Others credit Steed as being their inspiration to start working with video games, thanking him for giving "a nobody" his time, and acknowledging just how much the industry owes to this man.

His career wasn't just in games development, however. Steed also worked for Xbox. His one true love, however, was modeling. Steed authored several books on the topic, and gave countless speeches at GDC (including the 2008 keynote), and many other industry gatherings. He also hosted modeling and art competitions, offering money and prizes to artists who competed against him in "Cute Doll" and "Bad Girl" challenges.
    From Steed's 2008 keynote speech:

Steed leaves behind a wife and children - the details of his death remain unclear at this time.
A strong man doesn't need to read the future, he makes his own
