    Lightbulb Electronic Arts promoting piracy?

    Electronic Arts promoting piracy?

Following a recent report that EA has decided to increase their sales prices in India, gamers have come forth to explain why this move is encouraging piracy.

As a member on NeoGAF named “Pranay_” explains, ”India, when it comes to gaming is regarded as one of the biggest piracy hubs in the world. However the distributors and majority of gaming companies decided to reduce the price of games where it would be affordable for an average spender in India which majority consist of college students.

Companies started selling their games at around Rs 999 (which is roughly $10), Rockstar and Valve even offered certain titles at around Rs 599. According to Pranay, this shift in prices led to less piracy, with many even promoting the purchase of original copies. To save costs, the actual discs and boxes were manufactured in India.

When Origin was launched by EA, the titles they offered were priced accordingly between Rs 499 and Rs 999. Though this changed after a while, as the value of the Indian Rupee decreased. The publisher marked up its games on Origin and in retail by 20%.

Last week, however, EA decided to try to sell games in India at the same price as they do in other nations, charging Rs 3499 (which is about $62) for console games and Rs 1799-Rs 3699 for PC games.

Users of the Battlefield 3 Battlelog
have brought this price shift even more under fire, explaining that the Battlefield 3 Limited Edition still costs Rs 1499, while the Battlefield Premium service has been marked up to Rs 2699. “Crysis 3 + MOH Warfighter (both limited editions) [cost] Rs 2988, [which] is almost [the] same price as that of BF3 Premium,” Battlelog user KGSingh states.

Many argue that the affordable sales plan in India was nothing people should have gotten used to, but increasing the average price for a game by nearly 620% in a matter of weeks is not a sensible idea.
Although retailers are cutting prices in their stores, Electronic Arts has possibly made pirating a norm, again.

That's not promoting piracy, thats more like trying to milk the Indian market. A lot of US gamers were pissed when they found out about the nearly half prices in India. But they should've done the smart thing, use a proxy to buy from those stores instead of complaining. I did, and now I have BF3 Premium for half the price
