Taiwanese gamer dies after 40 hours of Diablo III
The Lord of Terror has claimed another victim, after an 18-year old Taiwanese man collapsed and died following a 40 hour Diablo III marathon.The man - identified only as Chuang - arrived at an online cafe at lunchtime on Friday, booked a private room, and settled in for some seriously long-term gaming. He was left alone for nearly two days, and reportedly did not stop to eat or sleep during that time.
On Sunday morning, a cafe employee entered the room to check on Chuang and found him resting on a table. The gamer woke up, took a few steps and then collapsed, according to local media reports. He was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
In an unusual move, Diablo III publisher Blizzard broke its traditional silence on these matters, making a public statement on Chuang's death.
We're saddened to hear this news, and our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We don't feel it would be appropriate for us to comment further without knowing all of the circumstances involved.
While we recognize that it's ultimately up to each individual or their parent or guardian to determine playing habits, we feel that moderation is clearly important, and that a person's day-to-day life should take precedence over any form of entertainment.
Cause of death is yet to be determined, with an autopsy currently being carried out. Authorities surmise that after spending so many hours in a seated position, Chuang suffered cardiovascular problems, or potentially a fatal blood clot.This is the second Taiwanese death linked to video games in the past year - in February, a man was found dead in his chair at an internet cafe, reaching for his keyboard after a 23-hour League of Legends session ended with a heart attack.
