Lightbulb [Guide] How to fix a Noisy HDD

How to fix a noisy HDD

1). First open the HDD casing ( you can use a chissel or even a small Tomahawk to do this)
2). Now Pull the HDD down & find the spindle shaft & bearing.

3). Get some High Temp bearing Grease ( Automotive wheel bearing Grease will do)

4). Smear the grease on the spindle shaft & bearing (don't be stingy with the grease).

5). Then get a big dollop of grease & rub it onto the actual disk with your fingers.
(the more grease you can get on there the better it is).
Do both sides ( sometimes putting it on the disk with steel-wool or Sandpaper works better).

6). I don't know what this part is called or what it does but Slap a heap of grease on this also.

7). Now, gently replace the disk to the spindle & give all the parts a light tap
with a precision tool(as in photo).

8). Now, Align the two HDD casing halves and screw it all back together
( there is no need to wipe off any excess grease that is extruded during assembly)

    9). That's it,, all done!
As you can see in the photo of the example HDD I have used for the tutorial it is now
all back together and in perfect working order ( better than new).
It should now spin effortlessly & give you many years of worry free noiseless use.

I don't think anyone would be willing to do this esp in this era of HDD prices, certainly not after seeing the 6th picture.

You must open the casing if you want to apply grease on the platter.
