Quad-Core vs Hexa-Core

Hi!

I'm currently using an AMD Phenom II X6 1090T at stock clocks with the stock cooler. I am going to upgrade my PC and was thinking about going for an Intel build this time around.

The Ivy Bridge CPU with the highest clocks (i7 3770) is available now in Bangladesh and it would be my best bet for a future-proof setup, if I were to go for Intel.

The 3770 has 4cores/8threads and my current 1090T has 6cores/6threads.


Questions:

i) Does the 1090T hold any advantages over the 3770 due to having a higher number of cores?
ii) Are there any games that can take advantage of the six cores? How will the 3770 perform with the upcoming game titles, considering that it is a quad-core?
iii) How long do you suppose I'll be able to run games at max settings with the 3770, considering a possible GPU upgrade in the near future?
iv) If cores are of vital importance to performance, would the 8-core Bulldozers be a better option? And what about the upcoming Piledrivers? Are they going to be worth the wait?

My sole purpose for the upgrade is gaming. So please advise accordingly.

1) i7 3770 is far superior to x6 1090t. Basically more cores would relate to better performance for multithreaded software. But most software, specially games wont be able to utilize that many cores. Most importantly, ivy bridge has much higher performance than 1090t on a per core basis aswell.
2) None, or atleast most of the games can't take advantage of 6 cores. Also, dont forget i7 has 8 threads. Again 3770 will perform better than 1090t is any game.
3) As long as you have an adequate gpu, you will be able to run games for years, I cant give you an actual figure though. Going to guess atleast over four/five years.
4) No, per core the i7 is the much better performer and most games are not so multithreaded. 4cores/8threads are not as good 8 cores (when the cores perform equally) but ivy bridge's 4cores/8threads is better that bulldozers 8cores.

Amd's cpus are good but for a pure gamer with a good budget, intel is the answer. I personally don't think its worth waiting for piledriver.

4) No, a 3770 will perform better than BD as well. The entire BD architecture is strained on resources, so if any application uses the 8 cores, BD will not perform very well.

At this moment, Intel holds all the crowns. Performance/enthusiast, price/value...you name it, it's all theirs atm. Piledriver isn't looking to be that great either, so it's safe to get IVB right now.

For gaming you should go with a i5 k series. There may be few games which can utilize 6 thread. Game companies make games for all users not only for 6 core holders, it is a business, they always try for maximum selling & profit. Most of the games are designed for dual thread & currently there are games designed for quad thread but not all the games. It is mostly depend on GPU. And intel Hyper Thread is a virtual thread, there is no benefit of it in gaming. It was designed to perform multiple operation by using the unused resource of physical cores. Grab a K series + good cooler + good GPU. With a high end GPU you are good to go for minimum 2.5 years ( if you are using 1 display). It depends on display configuration & resolution.

What motherboard would be good with a 3770? The one I'm currently considering is the ASUS P8Z77-V, which is available at Global Brand. Would the Sabertooth Z77 be a better option? I want to avail PCI_E 3.0, so please suggest accordingly.

Which is the better/later version - X79 or Z77? Would an X79 mobo be a better choice than a Z77? Are X79s available in Bangladesh?

edit : These ASUS boards say that they feature PCI_E 3.0 slots. Are they true PCI_E 3.0? Will it be able to fully utilize the potential of a PCI_E 3.0 GPU?

The i7 3930 is the ultimate i7 & of course there is performance gaps between i7 3930 & 3770. K series stands for unlocked multiplier. So, if you do not overclock there is no difference between 3930 & 3930K. i7 3930 has 6 cores & 4 channel memory controller.
i7 3770 does not have unlocked multiplier & you do not need any Z77 for this cpu. Z77 is equal to H77 + overclocking features, nothing else. And Z77 does not mean the perfect overclocking, it is just enable the overclocking. Perfect overclocking needs high quality VRM design, many vendors (including top vendors) making Z77 board with a normal 4 phase VRM just for marketing. So, if you looking for overclocking grab a motherboard with minimum 10 phase VRM & quality full VRM components with a good PSU. I saw a Zotac board on internet a few days ago with 27 phase VRM.
Any H77, Z77 support pci_e 3.0. But there is no practical performance rise in pci_e 3.0 for gaming. pci_e 3.0 intended for GPGPU applications, which designed for parallel processing. Current games are not capable to utilize the full pci_e 2.0 bus. So, i think pci_e 3.0 is not necessary for gaming, unless you do not want to go with multi gpu & multi display configuration like eyefinity.

I do not have any idea about the 3930K's availability in BD. You can check it here, http://www.electroshop.info/shopping/ or contact them to see what they say, they import from USA. There will not be any noticeable performance gap between 3930K & 3770, actually it is tough for average human eye to differ the performance between i5 & i7 in gaming paired with a good GPU. Games are nothing but software designed by humans. A software can take resources as much they are limited by there design capability. I do not think any company will design there game only for i7, they will do it for dual core to i3 & i5.
I do not have any idea about safety margin cause it depends on how much current the processor absorb & the quality of VRM to supply these current without overheating. Maybe any expert overclock er of BG can answer this question.

I'm not going for X79. Z77 + 3770 is what I am considering right now.

There shouldn't be any problem using pcie 3.0 in that setup, right? And I'll probably go for AMD GPUs.

it seems your sole purpose of these cpu+gpu upgrade is GAMING. but, from your gadgets, i see u have 6790HD and a lite power 500W.
NOW, if u keep the same gpu+psu and upgrade to ivy 3770 + z77 , u would get bump on your gaming experience about 1%
BUT, if u keep the same cpu+motherboard like, u have in your gadgets and upgrade with the same/even less amount of money, like amd 7850HD/7870HD + smart TT 650w , u would get bump about 50-80%.

The 3770 will be a huge upgrade, and I'll also be changing my PSU and GPU. I usually get a completely new build rather than a step-by-step upgrade. So I probably wont be using anything from my current setup.


Since we are talking about the upgrade, are PSU and Casings from reputed brands other than Thermaltake available in Dhaka?

About a week ago, Binary Logic confirmed i7 3770 to be available. I doubt their stock has run out already.

I would definitely go for the 3770K over the 3770, but afaik only the 3770 is available in Dhaka.

What other components did you bring from there? Does it cost a lot more if you buy them from abroad? What to do if some of them malfunction/don't function at all and you have to get it replaced?

No offense, but in your 'gadgets' section it says that you are using a 4850. May I ask why?

Since you are experienced in buying computer hardware from abroad, would you point out the pros and cons of buying from abroad than buying from here? There's a big chance that I might get mine from abroad (Malaysia probably) this time and it'd be really helpful.
