Default Microsoft to block browser choice in Windows RT, says Mozilla

Mozilla has already revealed that it's working on a Metro-style version of the Firefox browser for Windows 8, but the company is now crying foul over what is says are Microsoft's intentions to limit user choice for browsers on ARM-based devices. At issue isWindows RT, which as Mozilla states in a blog post will feature two environments: Metro, and the more-traditional Windows Classic. According to the company, however, the only browser that will be allowed to run in Windows Classic mode will be Microsoft's own Internet Explorer, locking out any third-party options. Given that other browsers can run in the Metro environment, Mozilla points out that there should be no technical limitation preventing apps from being able to run in Classic as well.

Microsoft had previously announced its intentions to push Metro-only development for RT, despite the planned inclusion of a desktop version of Office 15. Mozilla's accusations obviously bring to mind Microsoft's troubled legal history with Internet Explorer; the company famously bundled the browser with its machines as a competitive advantage until the DOJ stepped in back in 1994. The DOJ judgements, however, expired in May of last year. CNET spoke with Mozilla general counsel Harvey Anderson, who stated that Microsoft attorney David Heiner told him the company wasn't allowing other browsers because of the unique security and power needs of the chips used to power mobile devices — needs only Microsoft could properly address — while also pointing out that as an ARM-based OS, Windows RT "isn't Windows anymore."

Anderson told CNET that he wanted to see if Microsoft would resolve the issue on its own before taking any further action, but that "sometimes they need some pressure... If it turns out to be legal pressure, that could be the thing." We reached out to Microsoft on this story but the company declined to comment

They didn't complain when iOS blocked everything else except apple's safari/webkit. But a 0% share Windows RT gets the bashing.

All 3rd party apps in Windows RT must be using Metro/WinRT API. Take it or leave it. End of story.

Apple is well-known for its my way or the highway philosophy, and they take enough bashing for it. But if Microsoft were to go down the same route, things do NOT look good for Windows 8. This is shaping up to be another Vista/ME debacle.

You are not reading things correctly.

This is about Windows RT. Not Windows 8.

In Windows 8, firefox/chrome has everything they could want.

You're right, thanks for pointing that out! But I don't get the point of this decision, what's the advantage behind pushing IE down everyone's throat? If MS really wants Windows on ARM to succeed, they need to make it as flexible as possible...

First and foremost, this is a technical issue.

Windows RT has a new set of API and sandboxing model. Every 3rd party application has to use those and Windows RT will only work for apps thru Windows Store.
The new WinRT model will be 99.99% times virus/malware free environment. It will be extremely power efficient, fast and less prone to crash. All thanks to enforcing the new WinRT. This also means none of the traditional applications that we use now will work on Windows RT.

Mozilla is saying they need to access more than WinRT to make Firefox. So if microsoft gives Mozilla the access to do so, what happens when Adobe asks the same for photoshop? What about MPC? What about 3D Studio MAX? What about your/my OWN application?

Like it or not, Windows RT is a closed platform (similar to iOS) that will be tightly regularted by Microsoft. It has almost ZERO backwards compatibility with previous versions of Windows...Windows RT is not "Windows" anymore.

As for "openness", Windows 8 is still there will 101% freedom.

Finally, Apple blocks of other browsers completely unless they are a "re-skin" of apple's own. In case of Windows RT, MS will not block off the browser if it uses WinRT api just like EVERY other Metro app will do.
You need to keep in mind that MS is not blocking of Mozilla/Google, they are locking down EVERYONE to WinRT API in Windows RT because unless this is done, the whole security model of Windows RT goes down the drain.
The abuse of greatness is when it disjoins remorse from power.

I dont know how come Mozilla will use anti trust laws here. Microsoft mobile platform has very low market share. What Mozilla is doing is absurd. They have lost competitiveness over the last few years and now they are desperate.

Apple used to ban other browsers in iOS but they allow it now. This is a step backwards, but I'm sure eventually it'll be allow.
