Default Cable Modem or Cable Modem+Router

I am thinking of getting Charter cable from this month. I need a cable modem for the connection. Since its gets expensive if you lease the modem from ISP, I am thinking of buying one. I am thinking of buying a DOCSIS 3.0 modem so that I can get higher speeds if I upgrade my package later and its also backwards comaptible with lower speeds. Now there are several options available:

    http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-SB612...6507239&sr=8-2
    http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-SURFb...pr_product_top
    http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Modem-Ro...pr_product_top

Getting a router+modem will be more cost effective but many people in forums/reviews say that it is better to get them separately. What do you guys think? Is it better to buy modem and router separately or to buy the combo? I my share this connection with my neighbor in the next apartment.

How many people will be using it? If its just you, you can just save some money by getting the modem only. If not then get a router as well, flash it with Tomato and use QoS

And don't be afraid to get refurbished routers, I got one and its running as good as new
