    Default Confused

I know this is an awkward topic, i really believe earlier that whatever medium u r in, u need to build up a very good basic as well as communication skill for winning sits in reputed local and overseas universities, and so i was happy that i do not think about mediums, but few days ago some start telling me(including one of my friend) that its a lot easier for english medium students to get chances in foreign universities, and bm student can even stand a chance against them, for that i searched the net for whole but didn't find such types of coincidences. And in sat coaching, i saw that em and bm are not that much different, who has good basic were always getting higher marks in self evaluation tests(i managed to get above 84% in the tests, i know its not good but as a beginner and also i will sit it for a year later, i didn't get depressed with these scores, was doing also good in english, in english or math sometime bm students prevailed winners and sometimes em students did) and yes a good result in o and a levels exam may help u, but again that needs a lot of hard work and perseverance, and for usa i see everyone despite from bm or em have to sit for sat(ayman vaia is a good example to it)
now i am in a confusion, do mediums really matters??? if it does a lot, though it will be a lot hard for me, i have to convince my parents to change my medium because i've dreaming for a reputed foreign university,
    pls help

Do SAT, get better score than them, finish TOEFL, your chances will be the same.

Biggest cloud computing company? Who'd that be, Amazon? Aside from them, rackspace/gogrid are about the only contenders for the 'biggest' title, hm.

@shafi , as far as academy goes, you have a much better chance at getting scholarship(financial aid) for studying at a US university if you're from an english medium background and much less if you're from a bm background.

I've seen a LOT of BM students who have very high calibre and potential...may be in some ways better than most students from EM schools...so it's not like I'm trying to undermine BM students or anything just blaming the system.

In fact your talents mostly depends on you, the individual...other than that yes...the difference between EM & BM will definitely exist and play a role in shaping how you perceive things.

Also don't worry so much about which university you want to go for...they're all the same...bull 中中 stuff...there will be a point in your life that you will wonder why did u even bother to get a degree in your life & that it wasted so much of your time. Imo from my personal experience most of the stuff that I learned in my university were theoretical and that's about it...they won't go further than that but if you want to advance your career you'll have to learn most of the practical stuff on your own, research & learn even more.

Personally I had zero experience in programming, I started learning linux, programming & everything related to this field on my own...a few years back...I learned so much & found so much interest in coding (you need dedication ofc) that after a while I decided to participate in a lot of open sourced projects with a lot of programmers that I knew from various forums...after that I started freelancing on my own...and what do u know..today I'm working as an intern for one of the biggest cloud computing company in the country (Not BD)...and my next internship has already been scheduled with IBM.

Do I personally give any credit to my university? Well...they taught me the basics but it's pretty much me who carried myself through this on my own.

Moral of the story...no matter who you are, where you're from...you're the one who can shape your future by your own will. So don't lose hope.

If you're english is good, and you know the stuff on the tests, than i dont see why they would care between english and bangla mediums. as far as im concerned, both systems kinda suck in BD, so i doubt either one will give you a heads-up over the other. As for SAT, its nothing like O and A levels, maybe in the math section it can help, but you need to know proper grammar if you actually want to get good grades in the reading/writing sections.

Of course, there's a difference but when it comes to studying at a US university, getting scholarship actually means getting financial aid in a majority of the cases. Correct me if I'm wrong there. That's what I've been told by a friend who's himself studying over at a university in Texas on full scholarship and he only has to pay for his living expenditures which is around 10k USD per year.

Here's the general perception they hold while deciding which student to choose from BD:

For BM student: He followed the Bangladeshi academic system which is of a much lower standard than the US academic system.

For EM student: He followed the British academic system which is of a much higher standard than the US academic system.

Who do you think would have a higher chance of getting scholarship?

Not saying that BM students will not get scholarship but they have much lower probability.

BTW, our culture is more sophisticated than that of the US. Didn't appreciate you saying our culture stupid.

Here's the general perception they hold while deciding which student to choose from BD:

For BM student: He followed the Bangladeshi academic system which is of a much lower standard than the US academic system.

For EM student: He followed the British academic system which is of a much higher standard than the US academic system.

Who do you think would have a higher chance of getting scholarship?

u r absolutely right in the scholarship part ..but getting that financial aid in undergraduate level is much tougher than in graduate level regarding the time

Financial aid is only for Americans. thats taxpayer money, why will they give it out to int'l students? Scholarship is a totally separate thing.

Not that I'm a big fan of U.S culture, in fact I rarely attended frat parties where people used to get drunk & get laid. There should be a good balance among the two, but the most important part is to never forget your roots, know who you're, and stick to your values. I've seen a lot of people too not just Bengalis, Pakis and indians and what not change completely...some are born in US...and they have totally different values. I knew this American Indian girl who used to like wear mini skirts in physics class, used to sit in front just to show off her legs...and slept with every guy I knew Lol...compared to that a lot of the white chicks dress much more appropriately and they're good too...they're not much different than us but the only difference is that their values & culture is different.
A question on off-topic which might seem pretty weird. Did you get looked down upon when they got to know that you're from BD? Playing games online a lot on foreign server with foreign players. When I tell them that I'm from BD, they are like, "中中! A third worldie!"

Also it's not just black people who're doing it...I once read in my email from a university wide police bulletin about a hijacking where 2 white guys beat up a student and stole his cellphone, etc. not that mine didn't get stolen...it was a black berry -.- & apparently got snatched off by a black guy who was hiding in the shadows Lol (perfect use of stealth & camouflage...I'm no racist btw Lol). When that happened I didn't even realise what happened till he ran and got away...cos I never even thought something like that could happen in a developed country like U.S...and the cops didn't apparently do anything about it...just made me feel better.
I can explain most of the ills of the US political and social system, but that would take a long time. I would just recommend, have you heard of Ron Paul, look him up and libertarians have to say about everything. That'll explain US foreign-policy, drug-policy, and law-enforcement policy.

As for black people, many of them choose to drop out of high-school on their own, its not necessarily a poverty thing per se. And most who do go to college, they go to "community college". So if you were in community-college, im sure you would have seen plenty of black folk there.

Most of this stuff is driven by laziness and peer-pressure. By peer-pressure i mean the "thug" (ghetto) attitude, which many people but mostly black kids think is cool. Also, welfare allows many people (blacks/whites alike) to become even more lazy and not do any work at all, just so they can collect unemployment checks.
