You read it right. What you see is the world’s first voice activated USB drive. We suppose standard passwords, biometric sensors and encryption aren’t secure enough. The idea behind the Hammacher Schlemmer is to introduce voice commands to beef up security. The concept is uber simple - the drive prompts you to speak the password every time it’s plugged in before allowing access. If you have cold, or can’t speak your password out loud for, you know, security concerns, you can always type in the password manually to get access. As novel as the idea, we have a hard time believing this is more secure than good old passwords. This is a typical case of unnecessarily innovating on products that are fine the way they are. And for $49.95 for 8GB, yikes, it’s pricey.
