they must be voltmodded(ie they are running volts wayy beyond specification hence they require more power than what is provided by the motherboard)

i had voltage boosters way back in 2005 when i bought the Athlon 64. it wasnt directly plugged into the modules, but rather a separate chip which provided more voltages to the memory modules

see this, its the one i had back in 2005 for overclocking my DDR1(TCCD) RAM above 600mhz

DDR boosters

should give you an idea, it basically allows running the RAM at higher voltages (above 3 volts for DDR1). but later on, the DFI lanparty nForce4 motherboard i got(still considered the best socket 939 motherboard) allowed 3.5 volts on the RAM, which was truly extreme so i didnt need the ram boosters anymore

nowadays, motherboards provide more than adequate power for RAM, hence these arent required anymore

nope, especially now that DDR3 requires very little volts to scale past 1600mhz, ram boosters are a thing of the past
