Default Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs

Frictional Games teases next Amnesia, may be set in China

Frictional is teasing its next game, and it appears it may be a sequel to Amnesia: The Dark Decent and set in China.

Looking over a teaser site launched by the firm, if you click on the image, it transports you to a Google Maps overview of China – and that’s about it really.

RPG did some digging, and found the site is indeed registered to Friction along with the following description: “3D game, Frictional Games, advanced physics, survival horror, action adventure, first person, horror, scary, HPL, work in progress, upcoming game, next frictional game, game development.”

Furthermore, RPS found some interesting text accompanying the domain registry: “Welcome to the next Frictional game site, a site with information about our game projects in development. We use this site to post content about a project in development, during the period it does not have a final name decided.”

Hopefully something more concrete will be revealed from the firm soon, but an Amnesia game set in China?

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs confirmed as next Frictional Games project

Well, it’s official now. When Frictional Games linked a Google Maps search to Seattle’s Smith Tower, gamers were left to wonder what it meant. Could the next game take place in Seattle? What about the Google Maps link to China? When it was uncovered that the the Google Maps search lead to a restaurant called The Chinese Room, it seemed almost too good to be true. Fans instantly began tearing apart the website NextFrictionalGame.com to find more clues on the collaboration between Frictional Games and Dear Esther developer thechineseroom.

thechineseroom’s website is still keeping mum on their game “gameB”
    However here’s some concept art
Speaking exclusively with Joystiq, the two studios have revealed their latest, highly anticipated project – Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs.

Dan Pinchbeck from thechineseroom – lead writer and designer on the project – explained to Joystiq that while the game takes place 60 years after The Dark Descent, the only connection between the two is that they take place in the same universe. The characters are unconnected, the plot is unconnected, but the game tries to stay in spirit with the first Amnesia game. We could someday see a series of Amnesia games – and that’s definitely something we’d like to see.

A Machine for Pigs will follow a wealthy industrialist Oswald Mandus. Mandus has just returned from a rather disastrous trip from Mexico. The expedition ended in tragedy, and Mandus has fallen very ill. In his feverish nightmares, he sees a mysterious, dark machine. Months have passed by the time Mandus awakes and as he does, the engine of the very same machine that had haunted his dreams roars to life.

While several elements of The Dark Descent have found their way into A Machine for Pigs, many things have been changed up. The gameplay is designed so that even veterans of the series will be kept on their toes. If there’s one thing that Frictional has done very well, it’s keep gamers out of their comfort zone. It’s just the kind of game we like.

Grip revealed during the chat with Joystiq that several other developers, big and small had contacted Frictional to work out a collab for the next project. One of those collabs would be to bring The Dark Descent to Xbox Live Arcade. However Grip admitted that the team wouldn’t have the “time or willpower” to get it right on console. That attitude might change in the future but for right now, it sounds like the Amnesia series is set to remain PC exclusive.

While no date has been confirmed as of yet, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs will be available for PC sometime this fall. A Mac and Linux version will be available as well, if not at the same time, shortly after the release of the PC version.

As for the unusual title of the game Pinchbeck offered a line taken straight from the script. Perhaps a little vague, but deeply disturbing. This world is a machine fit only for pigs. Fit for the slaughtering of pigs.”

Default Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs will follow Dear Esther footstep

One of the keys to creating Dear Esther, said thechineseroom's Dan Pinchbeck, was allowing the player as much control over the narrative as possible. Speaking at a panel during GDC Europe, Pinchbeck addressed the intentional ambiguity of Dear Esther, saying that it gave players more freedom, thus making their time with the game more enjoyable. Rather than presenting the player with predetermined series of events, Dear Esther's story is filled with ambiguity and revealed randomly, leaving it to the player to interpret it. In a very real sense, they actually participate in the story's creation.

While most games lay out their stories in a clear, linear fashion – think big budget FPS and action games – Pinchbeck likens Dear Esther's story to a toy box. Instead of giving players a cohesive, linear story, thechineseroom created story blocks and lets players put them together. It's a bit like "story Minecraft," he said. "The story of Dear Esther doesn't actually particularly tell you anything. It just suggests things that could have happened, but you can do the work."

People are driven to think of events in terms of story, he said. "If something looks and feels enough like a story, people are likely to interpret the action in a storied way." As such, when creating Dear Esther, thechineseroom wasn't concerned with creating a complete, fully rounded story. "What we can try and do in games, is not tell a story, but to provide the player with the toolbox – the tools, the bricks that they need to tell the stories themselves," said Pinchbeck. "In exactly the same way that we consider things like physics sandboxes," he adds, "if you provide those units of useful, interesting stuff that players can play with, they will create an experience from it."

During the Q&A session, we asked Pinchbeck if Thechineseroom's next project, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs will follow the same model of abstract storytelling. Unlike Dear Esther, said Pinchbeck, A Machine for Pigs exists within the constraints of a "classic horror story," so it won't follow the same model entirely. "What we're going to try and do is we're going to try and keep the lessons that we've learned in terms of not funneling the plot down, not being really explicit with the player about what's going on, using inference, using suggestion," he said. "We're trying to have any opportunities we can to keep that open" for players to do the work of piecing together the ambiguous bits, which he says are especially important in a horror game. "You pretty much can't represent anything in a horror game that's going to be more scary than what the player thinks you're going to represent, and the moment you actually show it, you've lost an awful lot of the power you've got to scare them."

Frictional Games and thechineseroom have released a new set of screenshots for their upcoming horror FPS title, Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs. And as you can obviously see, these new shots are as dark as they can possibly get. Which is a good thing as Amnesia relies on that setting and players are asked to play it with the lights off. Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs is currently planned for a Q2 2013 release on the PC.

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs Delayed Yet Again

Bad news for all Amnesia fans as the highly anticipated sequel to Frictional Games’ horror title has been delayed once again. According to the developers themselves, the game won’t be released this Summer as it’s not ready yet. The good news is that both Frictional Games and thechineseroom want to make a quality product, meaning that this delay will benefit the game.

As Frictional Games’ jens explained why the game was again delayed on the official forums:

“We are optimizing, tweaking and in general putting the FG expertise to good use. TCR keeps putting in work as well. There are companies working on the translations (will launch with 9 languages in addition to original English). The porting guys are porting away. Deals are being made. Things are prepared for launching the game through more online stores than any other FG game before. In general occupied with all things related.”
More information on the game, pricing, requirements and availability will be coming at a later date.

Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs promises to be as scary as its predecessor. thechineseroom stated – back in February 2012 – that Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs will be filled with more terror, horror and paranoia.

All we can really do right not is sit back and wait until this new Amnesia gets out. And let’s hope that this delay will worth the wait.

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs Gamespot Review - 8/10

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is extremely disturbing, more than a little disgusting, and impossible to stop playing.

    The Good
Brilliantly written script Deeply unnerving and surreal setting Impressive voice acting Disturbing music and unsettling sound effects.

    The Bad
Drags over the last hour or so with repetition and story padding.
    Metacritic - 7.2/10

    Gamespot user review - 7.5/10

    -----
The games seems pretty short in length ... some reviewer mentioned it takes 4 to 5 hours to complete. Does anyone here played this game ot Outlast? which one is better?
