    Default AMD 2012-2013 Graphics Roadmap

At the AMD 2012 Financial Analyst Day (February 2), AMD revealed details of their 2012-2013 Roadmap, including what they have planned for the graphics market. For 2012, we have Southern Islands, for which the first couple of cards are already shipping. This is the HD 7900 series GPUs, with the GCN core. In 2013, we will see "Sea Islands", which will introduce a new GPU architecture, alongside some new Heterogeneous Systems Architecture (HSA, the new name for Fusion System Architecture) features.

At the time of writing, Southern Islands boasts the best single-GPU graphics in the desktop graphics market, with the Radeon HD 7970, introduced on January 10. The Tahiti series GPUs (HD 79x0) are the enthusiast level cards cards, with the HD7970 at the top of the crop and the HD 7950 being a cut-down HD 7970. The ultra-enthusiast HD 7990 is expected in Q2 2012, and that will be the dual-Tahiti core. Pitcairn (HD 78x0) and Cape Verde (HD 77x0) are expected during Q1 2012. These are the performance level cards. Mainstream cards will use the same core as HD 66x0 and HD 65x0 series cards, while entry level cards will use the HD 6450 core.

London, the 2012 notebook GPUs, all use a new core. In the Enthusiast and Performance level GPUs, we have Radeon HD 7000M series GPUs with a GCN core. The performance level cards also include Radeon HD 7600M series GPUs, which use a Terascale II architecture. This architecture is also used in the mainstream Radeon HD 7500M GPUs, as well as the HD 7400M series, for both mainstream and value markets. We have not yet seen details of the mobile GPUs.

AMD's GPU product strategy is to "Create leadership IP products that provide on unmatched visualization experience", and "Leverage the highly parallel GPU architecture in new applications and markets". Or to put it another way, they are improving their products to meet current market demands. It's nice to see they are committed to GCN and future technologies that enable easier gpgpu computing, the power of a good GPU is useful for far more than just gaming.

2013 will bring another new architecture to the graphics line-up. This will also include the introduction of HSA features to the GPU. This will enable most computer programmers, especially those using C++ as a development tool, to program the GPU as a co-processor. This will make various level of parallel programming and computing possible, massively increasing the speed of apps that incorporate the technology. It will also provide a unified address space for CPU and GPU, with shared memory space and GPU memory accessible through CPU pointers. Beyond the architectural goals, nothing more specific has been revealed about Sea Islands.

whatever amd is planning, there is no point if they release faulty products again and again to gain some market share.
