Default My review on MSI N580GTX LIGHTNING XTREME

Its been a hell of a weekend thief stole my iPhone4 ,my samsung PIXON ,my dad's panasonic Lumix and also my gillete Fusion
after the PSU came in didn't had any quality time with the GPU cuz went to sirajgonj for my cousin's wedding where all the stealing drama happened..
any way yesterday me and my bro took a ride with the GPU and .............................ITS JUST A MONSTER eats BF3 for breakfast ,metro2033 for lunch and other titles for dinner

Pros::3GB vram, Excellent cooling, crazy overclocks, perfect single card solution ,ooooone SEXY looking card it will dominate every other components in ur PC

Cons:: This friggin card measures 11.75''(yeah 0.25'' shorter than HD6990) i didn't noticed this until i assembled it in my chasis. So u will need a BIG case to fit this card

Ah... Where to start? First off if you don't already know and haven't heard of this monster of a card it isn't like any other ordinary 3GB GTX 580..MSI took this thing to a whole new level.

MSI has really done an amazing job on this card and the cooling solution they have chosen to go with. You've got the TwinFrozr cooling but with a little bit of excitement in it. You've got 2 huge blue fans on the front, that not only cool your card but at the same time when you first turn on your PC the fans will spin backwards for 45 seconds and remove all the dust and gunk from your card! Also, if your not one to monitor your temps while gaming and such, that's okay, they kept you guys in mind as well! The thermal monitor that comes with this bad boy actually turns the fans white, yes, I said white. Once your GPU reaches a certain temperature your fans will turn from blue to white! But don't worry, they will go back to blue.

The temps of this card is DAMN friggin good. currently it IDLES @ 29*c and it never ever breaks the barrier of 62*c whether u run furmark, heaven,3D mark 11 or playing games. The cooler is just EPIC and its dead silent...HELL my case fans are louder than this cooler.OC-ing this card is a piece of cake
i didn't touched voltage and without toucing it i got 900Mhz on the core 1910 for shaders and 2400 for memory and temps had no effect on this overclock....will tinker with it more when necessary

Single card/GPU solution you've got it. Now everyone says that this card is overkill for 1080p because 3GB is not needed for 1080p. I can max out ever major title with ease, still use more than 1.5GB vram and not have to worry about temperatures or running out of vram

i mean playing BF3 @ 65 fps average on stock clocks (both cpu nd GPU) EVERY 中中中夕ng thing MAXED OUT is no joke the memory usage at times showed 1600-1800mhz(depends) where most of the times it jumped from 1300-1500 lowset was 1100mhz. At going hunting level i was getting 120-130 Fps which was mind boggling

As for metro 2033 i was averaging at 40Fps everything maxxed out (stock clocks) memory usage went from 1400-1600mhz(depends)

Batman Arkham city...dont know what rocksteady was thinking in DX11 mode i get 60fps constant with stuttering and without any warning it takes a dive to 30 then 50 then 10 and back again to my 60fps WTF!! Playing in Dx9 had no problems and i dodn't think any of the cards in the market should have.

This thing destroys cysis warhead @ enthusiast mode i was getting constant 40-45fps sometimes 50-60(depends on the situation) this game is not so memory hungry

a quick run of Heaven Benhmark

eveything at stock both CPU nd GPU (no hanky panky)

This was just a quick glimpse of the card....i haven't tested the card to its limits nor the CPU is OCed..the Phenom is running @stock 3.2Ghz aaaand boy its going damn good.....it didn't felt for a sec that i was running a Phenom ii X6...may be u i7 or i5 guys can get more Fps

To wrap everything up here I'll just say this.

If you have the money in your budget, or the money at all, I would recommend this card to any serious gamer looking for a single GPU solution to game at about roughly any resolution. yeah some may say HD7900 is here or kepler around the corner ...WHY take this? and i think the results speak themselves. But this card is out of the market MSI stopped manufacturing these cards since this was limited edition. This card is cool, quiet, and never get's hot.3GB of vram so you don't have to worry about running out, and even if you don't want to overclock it yourself, no worries cuz this card is already a Beast! Power draw isn't as bad as you'd think either, I ran this card on a 1200w Silverstone Strider ST1200-G (i love OVERKILLS) and had no problems...maybe soneone with Good 700w unit can get away with this card.

i will be updating this thread by uploading gameplay videos ,more updated results after OCing my CPU cuz i don't think running this Beast OCed with CPU @ Stock is a good idea. OOOH yeah one more thing 3D results yet to come cuz the NX720 is in parents room..so will post soon.....

Thanks for reading guys! if you've got something to add and or would like to say, please comment and express your opinions and thoughts!
    tata for now

    Nice write up bro!

Please do include your official specs (stock clocks, volts etc) and Heaven benches with AA (4x and 8x).

I agree with that batman part completely. I ran the game just to see how well it performs...stuttering everywhere and FPS drops to 40-44 and it still STUTTERS. DX9 worked with on my 570 just fine (45 during intense fights, 60 the rest of the time), so didn't bother checking it with the 580.

How did you get 40 fps maxed out with metro ? which reso :S ? P.s You will not get higher fps at high resolutions and maxed out settings with an i7 or i5 no matter which generation, unless your benching something like civilization V.
Phenom at stock clocks with stock HT will have frame rate dips though more than the i7 but if you do OC it to 4G and have the HT up at 2800 its pretty good.

You should write how you benched. Did you use the game's banchmark tool?

Metro is not CPU intensive, besides most Dx 11 titles are supposed to be optimized for multicore processors. RTS games are where SB rapes STARS. Games like Civilization 5 and Starcraft 2 will show a good 20+ % lead even when maxed out.

waste of card if you use 1980*1080. any 570 card can give you comparable result in this res.

Download the latest patch + crack for the game, the tool is a part of that patch as far as I can remember. I think its version 1.1.

i dont think its a waste cuz if u see the memory usage even @ 1080p the highest mem usage i got was 1800mhz where 570 have 1.2GB of VRAM basically the mem usage was always over 1.3GB so what would happen if it runs out of memory like many were having troubles with GTX570 running BF3 cuz they were out of memory and issues like stuttering, slow downs occurs
so some way or other it does enhances the overall xperience and in 3D it surely will eat up alot of Vram crossing the 2GB barrier but lets see i haven't tried 3D yet....will post after i give it a run

I don't think the VRAM was ever an issue with BF3. The stuttering was the fault of the game engine itself, a patch fixed EVERYTHING!

A 580 and a 570 will show almost no difference in most games if you can stick with lower settings (by that I mean mostly AA and tess), but I can enable 4xAA and all ultra and get 60FPS (VSync'd) all the time, where as on the 570 I used to drop to 40, had no AA and had the Mesh setting at High (MP btw). AA makes a big visual difference in BF3 and I prefer to keep it that way

I don't know about you guys, but there were apparently a lot of guys with 570s stuttering due to the VRAM. Switching to a >1.2GB card fixed it with massive amounts of AA at 1920x1080+ resolution.

@naved777 , nice review dude! Enjoy that card, though you need more monitors. Oh, and why is that X6 not OCed ? Push it to 4GHz+, 3GHz NB, stock HT. ^^

I don't think so, there was some but after the patch it was fixed. Even when I played with 2xMSAA I didn't stutter, lower FPS but no stutter.

No no, I'm not talking about the patch. There are many complains with the low 1.2GB VRAM of the 570, when using a good amount of AA, just search at OCN.

EDIT: If the Lightning Extremes are limited produced, then that means there is only two left in BD ? Damn, people are looking everywhere for these XE's, and are buying them second hand in every possible occasions. Little do they know that a country called Bangladesh has them brand new waiting in the shelves. x)

    Oreh nice!
& about the card? Hats off to it. Even the Matrix 580 gets a run for its money when on higher res with heavy AA.
Now some people will actually believe u own the card.

31.1? I expected more of a difference because of the 3GB VRAM, did you happen to notice the VRAM used during that bench? I personally got 29.5 with 290.53 drivers (295.51 increased it a little bit) with no OC and same settings but with 16x AF (no performance hit).
