Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
RE7 is a First Person Survival Horror game. While not actually the first game in the series to take on this perspective, RE7 nonetheless represents a dramatic departure from all previous entries in the series. Rather than focus on action-oriented combat sequences, RE7 follows a formula most recently seen in the original Resident Evil Revelations: a slower-paced game with a balanced emphasis on combat, survival and exploration. For the first time since RE4, there is primarily only one protagonist and no partner accompanying him.
True to classic RE, you can explore environments to find items that may be crucial for your journey. You will also find firearms and melee weapons that will be used to fight off deadly creatures, and Green Herbs that can be used to restore health. Other gameplay elements from recent action-oriented RE titles return in RE7 with some modifications, such as selecting different weapons/items using the D-Pad.
RE7 is compatible with the PlayStation VR. As of launch, the other two platforms (XB1 and PC) are not yet compatible with VR and Capcom has not announced any plans to do so. VR allows the first person perspective to be experienced with greater immersion, although Capcom warns that because VR mode could be mentally and physically exhausting, certain players should test the mode out before diving into it completely.
PS4 Pro owners get an enhanced visual experience in the form of 4K resolution graphics, HDR support and a higher resolution when playing the game in VR. Xbox One S owners have access to HDR whereas original owners do not.
RE7 takes place in 2017, approximately 4 years after the events of Resident Evil 6, in the fictional city of Dulvey, Louisiana in the Southern United States. It features a new protagonist named Ethan Winters, a civilian who offers fewer combat skills than most previous Resident Evil main characters. Ethan is searching for his missing wife, Mia, which leads him to a derelict plantation mansion, home of the Baker family.
