Thread: Help me decide on a laptop.

Smile Help me decide on a laptop.

[Note: I know the difference between Netbooks and Notebooks/Laptops. ]

Hi! I was planning to buy a brand new laptop from October 2011 and set my goal to achieve it on 2nd week of Feb'12.
So far I have reached my goal amount + an extra 10k .

I have done a bit of research using the ADs on ProthomAlo newspaper.

What I have noticed so far in terms of spec, price and brand
: Samsung has the best spec for the lowest price
: Dell has the latest USB 3.0 but spec wise its behind Samsung while price is high
: Asus as always seems to have poorest specs while price is very close to Dell
: Toshiba is the most expensive but their spec is a bit better or close to Samsung
: No HP ads or I didn't notice any, but heard that these are quite expensive and screen-size is pretty small

I almost decided that I'll get a Samsung Notebook as from my data collection I have seen that Samsung has very rich specs(greater RAM,HDD,Screen Size/resolution) for the least price. But then I heard rumors about poor customer care and don't see that many Samsung around so I withheld my decision. I was always a fan of AMD and this will be my first move to Intel. I know Laptops aren't as powerful/efficient as the PCs but they are fair enough if chosen wisely. I do have an awesome LCD(hp) and a large 32" LCD TV,and both sport HDMI and AGP ports so I can work on huge monitors whenever need arise.

My budget is fixed at 42k(extendable to 50k) for I'll keep a few backup bucks for those extra unexpected expenses. I want a reliable Laptop which won't die after 2 years and a fair customer care/repair center of the brand present in Dhaka . I don't want a gaming rig ofcourse but a decent Laptop with fair amount of RAM and processing power. I was suggested to look for atleast 1080px(1920x1080) resolution but they either doesn't exist or are too rare and expensive, in our BD market. The max resolution so far was 768px (1366x768) which is okay I suppose.

So please help me decide which brand to go for. If I stay within my budget(which isn't quite expandable) and move beyond Samsung, I'll have to settle for either Core i3 or too little RAM with small HDD and heavy/fat ones . But then again
I don't want to save a few bucks just to spend some ks on repairing it in some lame laptop repair shop because the brand shop won't repair it after my warranty period no matter if I want to pay the fees + a few extra bucks as well. I had poor experience with Samsung in the past with a pricey Smartphone repairing within its warranty period. So I'll wait a bit and count my money in the mean time.

Thanks for all the effort and time. I am ever grateful to all of you.
[Note2: I am not looking for Netbooks, so please refrain from getting them into this discussion.]

Hey thanks for your suggestion. I want to exclude any kind of webcam no matter how good they are while keeping the slimmer profile.
I am interested to know about the aftersale services like repair, upgrade, warranty etc...
Does Samsung have any official repair center in Dhaka? HP is okay I suppose but how is their aftersale support?

    Thanks

Dell Inspiron N4110 or Vostro 3450 is better .

    Cool

    Hi!

Thanks for all the suggestions and advices. I am really grateful to you all and the whole community.
I have finally managed to buy a new laptop this Monday(Feb 20th).

Its a HP Probook 4530s (Small Business Class).
    - Intel Core i5 2450M 2.50GHz (Sandy Bridge)
    - 4GB DDR3 RAM
    - 500 GB HDD
    - Bluetooth, Wifi 802.11 b/g/n, LAN
    - x3 USB 2.0, x1 USB 3.0
    - HDMI
    - HP DVD RW(HP says it supports BlueRAY,but can't check)
    - Multimedia(something like that) Card Reader
    - SRS sound thingy
    - Multitouch Touchpad
    - 15.6" HD LED backlit display
    - Biometric Finger print input
    - HD Webcam(upto 4MP)
    - 6cell battery(will upgrade to 9 cell later)

I have included some lame(sorry,am not good at taking pictures ) but fair enough pictures here along with the specs shot from dxdiag.

And the mighty specs from dxdiag:

Even though it says 4 CPUs, its actually supposed to be 2 according to intel M series specs.

So far everything is good or over my expectations, but there are a few problems as well.

Running Win 7 32 bit,so am not getting the total RAM(4GB), only 2.65GB is active.
I had to pay quite a good amount for that lame 4MegaPixels WebCAM up on the top which I really didn't want.
    The weight is approximately 2.65KG!!
I had to go beyond my safety cash limit over my budget for unavailibility of 14" series, its 15.6" .
    Only 1 year limited warranty.

Other than that am totally happy with it.
I heard and seen reviews and complains that the monitor is lame so you can't see whats on the monitor
from more than 0.5 meters away but my monitor didn't show such problems because I can see everything in it from more than 1 meter away.
So I suggest before buying laptops don't rely on the customer reviews only, check out with the top web magazine reviews as well.

And yes if you were wondering, it costed me BDT. 56,500 . Given the rise of dollar price this was quite reasonable ,but it was a bit odd because
I had to bring a sales man with me back home to pay the extra 3500 bucks due to under calculation and my budget being 52000 only.

So, what do you think? Tell away

Sorry about the large post but you know am totally excited

Nope, no GPU. Models with dedicated GPUs are quite expensive, I have seen a dell with core i3 + dedicated GPU costing around Tk. 72,500
