How long should I run the test to get a reliable aprrox for the max temp?

Forever.
Seriously, Furmark's throttled within the drivers these days. You are better off using OCCT, it uses Crysis 2's profile to make a fool out of the driver.
Five minutes in OCCT and you should be good. Max temperature will depend a lot on your ambient temperature as well, it's Summer now, so whatever your max temperatures were during Winter is no longer comparable.
Furmark is gpu-killer man, nothing else -_-. Try Unigine Valley or OCCT

Don't use Furmark, use OCCT or try real games. Like GTA5, Witcher 3. These tests would be more realistic than the hard and stern burning your card with Furmark approach.
There is no point in running any benchmark unless u have a definite reason for it.
if u need to find max temp, an hour of furmark should be more than enough. As soon as u see a flat temp line u should stop and that usually takes less than 10 minutes.
remember the power components, tim, the chips gradually wears out of normal use.
unnecessary benching like some of u suggested will just expedite the process.

OCCT uses Furmark for GPU test.

OK. More specifically, OCCT uses a modified/differently optimized version of Furmark.

Well, I'm probably completely wrong here. A long time ago when I ran OCCT GPU test, I saw Furmark.exe using the GPU. Now I can see it's Crysis2.exe. Either they have changed their GPU test engine, or my memory is fooling me.
Isn't that what I wrote in the first reply of this thread?
Lol :v
wait do you guys service GPUs? How are ur success rates
I ran furmark for 20mins .. My temps flat lined at 85 degrees :S.
Is that okay-ish for a R9 390?
My PCs case walls were burning up xD.
Thanks for the tips. Wont be doing unnecessary tests anytime soon.
Will check out occt tho
85 Degrees is okay for a R9 390, what are your VRM temps like?
