    Cool Squad

    Squad (early access)

    http://store.steampowered.com/app/393380/

Squad is a heavily team-oriented tactical first person multiplayer shooter developed by OffWorld Industries. Squad is based on famous Battlefield 2 mod Project Reality- created by the same developers. Based on Unreal engine 4, the game's primary focus is teamplay and realism, so game mechanics highly discourage player to do lone wolf-ing. For example- at least 2 teammates are needed to capture enemy capture points, at least couple of teammates are needed to build forward operating base etc.

The game is one of the most greenlighted game on steam and will be available as early access on steam on December 15. Moreover Squad is one of the most successful video game kickstarter ever, earning four hundred thousand canadian dollars in kickstarter.

Game mechanics- There are 4 factions- USA, Russia, Insurgents and Militia (more will be added as its an early access video game). Each team has unique weapon set/classes. Right now there are no vehicles so the gameplay is totally infantry oriented, but as the development progresses vehicles will be added in future, possibly with choppers. The maps are big, like 4x6 Km so each squad needs to deploy respawn points and forward operating bases in order to keep the fight going(or keep pushing the objectives). The developers' plan is to create 50vs50 or 70vs70 player battles (and even bigger).

What makes this game different from others is that Squad has a base building system so your team can garrison and maintain objectives(or hilltops) easily. Squad leaders are supposed to 'order' squad mates to create walls/barricades in specific places and squadmates are supposed to carry out the orders.

The game mechanics may sound very similar to Arma series, it is actually similar to Arma but Arma is a simulation game and Squad developers don't want to go full simulation like Arma series, neither they want to create an arcade-ish shooter like battlefield. They want to create something in between.

Similar Games- Arma series, Project reality mod, Insurgency, Red Orchestra 2, Battlefield series, Arma 3 king of the hill mode(base building).

Watched some youtubers playing it few months ago. The graphics is spectacular for a game based on Unreal Engine. The HUD was also quite clean. Not bloated like Battlefield, not empty like Insurgency and not off-putting like Arma 3. The maps could've been better though. Take no offence, the maps are perfect for infantry action (since only infantry was available at the time. Vehicular combat is slated for later release), but since the maps are of rural Afghanistan, looks quite boring.

unreal engine 4 has spectacular graphics and Squad's graphics can be even improved later.

i like hud of insurgency but for a 'open world' multiplayer some hud elements are really necessary specially when the game has medic-revive system and base building system etc...

maps could have been better, project reality mod has some big huge maps with dense trees and everything but as an alpha edition game squad has optimization issues so it will take time to make better/dense maps. but no worries they are adding maps every month and after steam release things gonna go faster

one the main things i liked about this game is that the ak47 gun recoil is higher than even insurgency, difficult to shoot mid to long range.

1st impression- as expected game is really early access. its has few bugs and bad optimization in general.

as i expected the gameplay is quite good itself, the recoil pattern feels quite realistic and difficult to maintain, if you dont switch to single fire mode or burst fire mode you will face hard time to hit enemies even in medium to close range let alone long range,
which makes me happy. this game is very squad intensive, if you dont have a organised squad you will not survive and your team will be beaten. its very communication dependent, but that doesnt mean its not skill dependent, you need to be quite good to hit people from long range. like real wars, if you can manage to outnumber enemy garrison, you are more favored to win.

playerbase is quite strong in europe and usa, but they dont have any asian server yet. but they will have them soon.

optimization is bad but its still lot better than arma 3 i believe, because even the biggest squad map till now is quarter of the size of arma 3 altis. its heavily cpu dependent because of unreal engine, but you can play the game at 60 fps easily with i7 oc and 970 or even 960, but i5 with 960 mostly will give you ~40 fps. good thing is that you can get spectacular graphics even with gtx 960 as its not very gpu intensive. i think biggest squad map is little more than half of gta 5 map.

map design- fool's road is awesome, very sneaky map and really fun to play. there are 6 maps and not all maps are fun, but map variation is significant, two maps won't make you feel the same.

suppression and spawning- as you die with ~2 hits, if you get suppressed it matters and you will be scared, like insurgency and unlike battlefield. hit points are greater than insurgency i think, you wont die as easily as insurgency. map is big and rally points are not easy to get so people try their best to stay alive. no lone wolfing, you need at least 3 people to do 'lone' wolfing.

night maps are fun but difficult to attack in night because there are no nightvisions yet. and i miss the laser pointer at night from insurgency.

bugs- lot of bugs but still less severe than battlefield 4 launch bugs/netcodes i believe.

base building system- squad leaders can put tires, blocks, wires in capture points and its necessary to block enemies to invade your objective.

player models look great, but its difficult to differentiate between russian army and militia because they are both green or greenish white. i hope they make russian army uniform look little different.

price- 40$ is too much at this moment, but its early access and it will get lot better very soon. at this stage its for early adopters or those who really want arma 3 but not arma 3.

Seems like you're the only one remotely interested about this game here. I might buy it if the playerbase increses significantly/price reduces in sale. BTW keep your attention also to Escape From Vorkut. H1Z1/DayZ type game but looks like the shooter mechanic is very good like FPSes. Some devs were part of the S.T.A.L.K.E R dev

remotely- i bought the game on steam release.
playerbase aint bad but they gotta have SG servers, and prices are high compared to content atm.

Well you can never tell if Early Access will be good anymore. I mean look at the amount of crappy games, I can't name them to begin with. Steam Greenlight was much worse

i don't see how realistic FPS's are racist in any way...if you mean in most games they're hunting for "terrorists" who happen to be middle eastern then no. mainly since these games also show russians and east europeans as terrorists who are well white. and several others places..the good guy is mainly the americans but that's just because the devs are american you can try playing some fps game that's not done by them like Metro Redux it's a great game.

i think most of the people will like ark and rust more than squad coz people like base building or fantasy games more than another realistic shooter...

to find out player base go to steamcharts.com and squad.rocks you can see playerbase in there. 4000 players on peak hour 1500players in off peak. problem is they dont have much player in SEA region, there are couple of servers in SEA though.

i dont know about sale, it probably wont get on sale soon, i am even surprised that rust got a discount because i thought they are not gonna have a discount until it gets finished.

you are right about 99.999% early access, but here the thing is quite different coz unofficially, OWI completed both bf2 PR mod and also arma 3 PR mod, they are both quite trustworthy and capable of doing a great job here. And not only they completed modding... they made couple of great custom maps in those mods which are quite fun to play in a 'realistic' game.

    OFF TOPiC:
i would say call of duty a bit racist and has some propaganda elements so they can earn billion dollar each release... their single player campaigns mostly show all westerners like yanks and brits are good guys and all others- russians, arabs, black africans, brown brazilians and vietnamese etc etc are evil. lets not kid ourselves call of duty gets sold not only because teenagers love first person arcade-ish shooters, but because it is more than just a video game to many people(i mean westerners). they even managed to manipulate history of vietnam war to show americans went in for a good cause. :/
you can say battlefield is a little bit racist too.

but i dont think insurgency or squad is racist coz they dont even have a single player, their multiplayers are just showing couple of armies- us rangers, russians, insurgents(talibans), militia(probably afghan border police or ukranian militia) fighting each other.

about cliche: yes kind of clitche i think. unless you are a realistic fps lover then its not for you i think. and right now its not for anybody except those who are really excited about it... coz rust and ark or other early access can offer you more playtime for less money
