    Default Vita for 6 years

Sony: PS Vita designed to tackle mobile gaming for next 5-6 years

    Content is the secret weapon

Sony launched its PlayStation Vita in Japan this past weekend to great buzz, possibly selling through its inital retail allotment if the electronics and console giant has it right. Sony has a lot of faith in new handheld, and it ought to considering it could very well be the bright spot in what proved to be one long year marred by costly online security woes.

Speaking to Fast Company, Sony's director of hardware marketing John Koller boasts the PS Vita is the "best handheld gaming system ever designed." According to Koller, the Vita was designed from the ground up with one thing in mind, "to supersede the mobile-gaming market for the next five to six years."

While Koller acknowledeges that Sony already has a "PlayStation Phone" in the market in the form the Xperia Play, the whole idea behind Xperia and the PlayStation Suite was to get mobile games to include PlayStation content. The Vita, like the PSP before it, aims to provide the console gaming experience on the go.

To better challenge the mobile and tablet markets, the Vita will leverage new trends like environment interaction (for example Augmented Reality) and location-based gaming that encourages content sharing and communication.

While Koller is confident the Vita will have no issues endearing itself to the "core" gamer market with its software, he believes his company will gradually lure more casual players on smartphones and tablets as the handheld matures into 2012.

The key part is getting this demographic to actually try and experience the Vita, which means taking the new product on tour: Sony will targeting malls, "social clubs" and "hipster locations" through the U.S. and "some parts of Canada."

These Vita product tours kick off well in advance of the North American launch next February. Koller notes that this will be something new for Sony, which in the past only really brought out the product for play on its actual launch date.

Although, I loved the Vita, I believe that The way iPhone and Android and Windows Phone are innovating, I don't think that it will last for 5/6 years. There will be more awesome stuffs in a few years.

It won't happen, cause the vita is way too powerful for phones to take over just yet. And for gaming eveyone prefer real button and joystick over touch only.
It may happen but after 5-6 years not just yet. And even if it does, like I said no button or joystick makes gaming limited.

Just 6 years? Well yes, smartphones' graphics are cool enough, at least for bringing "ooooh..." "wow man!..." "cool!.."z on instant checkouts. But it when comes to long term + hardcore gaming, sony's dedicated handhelds (does not necessarily include Nintendo) were always unmatched.
And gamers know it, graphics ain't always everything. Now if someone says "no it's a big thing", then yes, Vita will be tackling the smartphones on that, smartly enough. Surely for the coming few years.

Ipad 4's powervr sgx554mp4 gpu is already 2x stronger than the vita's.but still the vita'll get special optimizations not mention alot of games run on less than native res.so it'll probably last till 2016.

iPad 4 has like what, 4-5 times the resolution of the vita? So GPU performance needs to be at least 4x more to provide same FPS (assuming full linearity). We should see that in 2 years though, and yea I too don't see the Vita lasting another 6 years, 10 years to durer kotha.

I cannot ever play a game like GTA with touchscreen only, I have a PSP emulator in my mobile and IT SUCKS, not for the performance not for the screen, just for there is not joystick or button.

Even if mobile phones does manage to reach PS vita quality graphis, the games you are going to get is probably a fruit ninja/angry bird/temple run with improved graphics. There will be no real games for hardcore gamers.

Even if I had a phone with that quality graphics, without any doubt I would still buy a PS vita for gaming. Cause playing only with touch is not my type of thing, I believe that if anyone is a true gamer would understand what i am trying to say.

Mobile phones may give the same quality graphics in the near future but it can never beat a machine that was build for gaming only.
