DiRT Showdown announced with 'simpler arcade feel' - Trailer

    Codemasters details 'arcade spin-off'

Codemasters has announced the latest instalment in its Colin McRae racing series, DiRT Showdown, for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in 2012.

Showdown is described as "an arcade-style spin-off" that takes the extreme-sports elements of Dirt 2, mixes in the Gymkhana events from Dirt 3, and then lobs in Destruction Derby action for good measure.

Gamespot reports that the game includes three different types of racing, online multiplayer for up to eight players, and a two-player split-screen mode.

The game takes place in Codies' extreme-sports-enthused "theatre of racing," with new stunt- based Hooligan events on offer, as well as Need for Speed Autolog-style challenges you can send to your friends.

Controversially, handling has been changed for "a simpler arcade feel that should make keeping your car on the track and performing outrageous stunts much easier," it's claimed.

Dirt Showdown Preview - Less Dirt, More Destruction

Forget rallying. Dirt Showdown is all about arcade thrills, spills, and destruction.

Is it possible to please everyone? For those in the business of making video games, probably not. Even for hugely successful franchises like Call of Duty--which have reached the kind of critical mass that many developers can only dream of--there are still people out there happy to complain about short campaigns, foul-mouthed 12-year-olds, and an overreliance on linearity. It's not just shooters, either.

While Codemasters' Dirt 2 was by all accounts an excellent game, there were some who lamented its in-your-face extreme-sports theme, craving a return to the simulation days of old. Then came Dirt 3, which began to lean back towards simulation, upsetting those who had grown to love the extreme-sports angle of its predecessor. It's a battle that seems impossible to win, but Codemasters thinks it has found the solution with Dirt Showdown, an arcade-style spin-off that takes the extreme-sports elements of Dirt 2, mixes in the Gymkhana events from Dirt 3, and then throws in some Destruction Derby action for good measure.

It's a mix that boldly differentiates itself from the main Dirt series (which will make a return with a renewed focus on simulation in Dirt 4), offering up three different types of anarchic racing, online multiplayer for up to eight people, and two-player split-screen play. The whole thing takes place in what Codemasters is calling a "theatre of racing"; that is, an extreme-sports theme that harks back to Dirt 2, with a festival atmosphere of cheering crowds, over-the-top pyrotechnics, and arena-based tracks. The handling has been changed too, eschewing simulation for a simpler arcade feel that should make keeping your car on the track and performing outrageous stunts much easier.

Stunts are integral to winning Hoonigan events, which make up one of the three types of racing on offer. There's Smash Hunters, where you have to smash objects within a certain time limit; Trick Rush, where you perform stunts for points; and Head 2 Head, a trick gauntlet where you take on an opponent and compete for the highest score. If tricks aren't your thing, there are standard races too, including Lap Attack, Eliminator, and Domination. Finally, there are the Demolition events; Rampage, where you try to destroy all the other cars; Hard Target, where you have to try to escape the other cars; and King of the Ring, where all the cars race towards a central point, meeting in a spectacular crash.

All those modes are available in Career mode and in multiplayer, either online or split-screen, as well as Joyride, which is a mission-based mode that ties in to Showdown's social features. Similar to EA's Autolog, Showdown lets you send challenges to friends, so if you've just run a stellar lap on your favourite course, you can challenge your friend to do the same. Standard leaderboards will also be included but will be more prominent in menus, so you'll be able to keep track of your friends' progress with ease, and no doubt get riled up when you see you're being beaten.

To ensure each race is action-packed, each of the courses has been designed with pinch points (areas of the track which close up and clump cars together), giving each driver a chance to catch up and. of course. encouraging contact between players. There are also numerous ramps scattered throughout each circuit for yet more destructive mayhem. The courses are based on popular locations from previous Dirt games, plus some new ones, and include Colorado, London, San Francisco, Yokohama, and Michigan.

There are three different vehicle types to take around each course, which are a mixture of licensed and fictional cars, trucks, and buggies. They're divided into three categories, each designed for a specific task: Racing, which includes muscle cars and SUVs; Hoonigan, which includes Ken Block's Fiesta; and Demolition, which is made up of strong, powerful vehicles. Though not every vehicle is officially licensed, most are based on real-world vehicles, just without the badges. There are some completely off-the-wall vehicles too, including a destruction-ready hearse-like car covered in skull decals and over-the-top exhausts.

We grabbed a brief hands-on with a very early version of Showdown, which featured a Baha racing circuit and a Destruction arena. Visually, there was little to differentiate Showdown from Dirt 3 at first glance, barring some enhanced details in the crowds and more in-your-face lighting effects from the fireworks that punctuated leaps we took off ramps. More noticeable was the handling of the cars, which felt very different. Whereas Dirt 3 required some practice just to get a car around a corner smoothly, here it was much easier to keep them on the track. The handling was very forgiving, even on the dusty Baha track, with our buggy hugging each corner and letting us pull off some impressive-looking drifts.

The Destruction arena let us get a taste of Showdown's multiplayer as we competed in an eight-player Rampage. Each car was launched into the center of a circular arena, where we inevitably smashed into each other, sending shards of debris flying through the air. Our goal was to smash our opponents as much as possible, with points awarded to us depending on how much damage we did. The small, enclosed circuit meant we were always in contact with another player, and before long our car had become a crumbling wreck, with a scrunched-up hood, missing wing sections, and a boot that flopped around as we drove around the arena. Eventually, our car gave out altogether, causing the wheels to fly off and forcing us to enter the arena with a new car.

Showdown certainly felt like a big change from the precision rallying of Dirt 3, but given the so-so performance of recent arcade racers such as Blur, Split/Second, and Motorstorm Apocalypse, it's one that could prove risky, even if it appeals to wider audiences on paper. That said, it was a lot of fun, with the vicious destruction modelling making Destruction mode in particular all the more exciting. Dirt Showdown is still in the early stages of development, so we're expecting a few more surprises form Codemasters before the game is released in 2012 on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Look out for more on GameSpot soon.

DiRT Showdown launching on PS3, 360, PC in May

Codemasters has announced DiRT Showdown, an arcady-type iteration of the rally series that will focus on aspects such as gymkhana, destruction derby and more. Three types of event make up Showdown: standard racing, stunt racing and destruction. As well as being playable alone, there’s split-screen and online for up to eight players. The release of Showdown will support a fourth DiRT iteration in the future. There’s a hands-on report over at GameSpot. The first trailer is below.

DiRT Showdown: 'This is for thrill-seekers... more authentic rally will return in the future'

    Codemasters reveals its 'arcade-style spin-off'

The latest contender from racing champions Codemasters, DiRT Showdown was revealed for the first time this weekend, with a 2012 release confirmed for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

Showdown is described as "an arcade-style spin-off" that takes the extreme-sports elements of Dirt 2, mixes in the Gymkhana events from Dirt 3, and then lobs in Destruction Derby action for good measure.
To help explain the new direction, and what it means for existing fans of the franchise, CVG quizzed associate producer Iain Smith and senior games designer Mike Chapman.

Why do you feel now's the right time to release a spin-off, rather than another full sequel?

    Iain Smith:
Make no mistake, DiRT Showdown is a fully-formed beast of its own. At the end of each project we try to digest as much as possible about the players' experiences. Through our game data analysis, as well as reading the game's critical reception, we found that DiRT 3 had been offering two experiences: the pure rally and gymkhana.
We've focussed on what those core experiences were - one a "hardcore", motorsports experience and one for thrill-seekers. We boiled down some of that thrill-seeking formula into what makes DiRT Showdown. However, this doesn't mean the more authentic rally content is disappearing from the DiRT series... that will return in a future game for sure.

What can you tell us about DiRT Showdown's new 'theatres of racing'?

    Iain Smith:
We really looked at the root of what appeals to a player about a racing game. Everyone likes the intensity of speed, the thrill of pulling off stylish moves and the aggression of crashing and destruction, so those play styles underpin the whole DiRT Showdown experience.
We're offering Race modes, Hoonigan modes and Demolition Derby modes. What binds these together is the idea that you're part of a show - an action sports spectacle competing in a festival of automotive chaos and out to impress the crowd.

    The Hoonigan events sound interesting...

    Mike Chapman:
Sitting alongside DiRT Showdown's Race and Demolition modes are the 'Hoonigan', this extension of Gymkhana, involves pulling tricks and stunts within a vehicular playground, all in the name of putting on a show and wowing the crowds.
The gameplay experience at its heart is about creating a stylish spectacle so it's naturally one of the key components in creating the theatre of racing in DiRT Showdown. We're also keen to build on the work that was done with the Gymkhana mode in DiRT 3 and take it to the next level, all within a game where it can truly feel at home.

The emphasis seems to be on 'arcade, pick up and play' - can you explain how you've made DiRT Showdown more accessible than DiRT 3? What are the 'new accessible controls'?

    Mike Chapman:
We want to offer players the best possible gameplay experience in DiRT Showdown and part of realising this goal is delivering a handling and control system that compliments the core experience. DiRT Showdown is much more than just the player versus the track and so it's vital for the controls to immediately offer that sense of connection with the vehicles.
However, there's still a sense of challenge and need to master the game; it's a Codemasters Racing title after all and we'll be bringing the same sense of passion and attention to detail to each and every vehicle.

Is this a game that will appeal to traditional DiRT fans, or are you gunning for a new audience?

    Iain Smith:
We shouldn't confuse the accessibility with 'dumbed down'. Player investment is really important to us, and we believe that through the substantial career mode those loyal DiRT players will still be suitably challenged. With that said, we'd definitely like people who have perhaps been intimidated by the DiRT experience in the past to connect with this.

Do you think DiRT Showdown has the potential to spawn a series of its own?

    Iain Smith:
We'd love it to, this is a game that's been in the collective mind of the studio for a long time and we're really excited about it. A great example is that we've always been proud of our damage system and regularly ask the question "How far could we push it?"
The Demolition Derby aspect actually rewards aggressiveness, so we're finally getting that chance to ramp the damage to 11. This type of destruction hasn't been offered in a pure form like this for quite some time so we firmly believe it will connect with players.

Similarly, will the traditional DiRT series continue?

    Mike Chapman:
DiRT Showdown is offering a new and more focused experience within the series and DiRT 4, or whatever we call it, will bring that same focus to some of the more traditional elements of the series. The fact that we're already discussing a DiRT 4 title should demonstrate that we absolutely want to meet and exceed the expectations of DiRT players.
Our Chief Game Designer has actually become an official rally co-driver since we completed DiRT 3 so we definitely want to offer a more authentic experience in future titles. We just feel that the scope of the DiRT series has really now outgrown a single game and we're keen to explore all of the unique styles of play that the DiRT series on a whole can offer.

You say DiRT Showdown is your 'most connected game ever'. What excites you most about its online features?

    Mike Chapman:
In terms of online play, we're confident that we have all players and preferences catered for. If players want to play some of our Demolition modes online with other players, our playlists ensure that they can get straight into a game and smash and wreck other online opponents.
If they prefer to team up with a friend in Splitscreen on the same sofa and take on the AI, they just need to plug in a second controller. Even players who don't normally play online with other players can still set challenges for people on their friends list so there should always be a sense of connected competition.

And you've added party modes and Splitscreen?

    Mike Chapman:
Splitscreen is important as not everybody will always want to play online and it a great way to share in the experience with a friend. The Party modes offer a light hearted diversion and an eclectic bunch of game types that further add to the multiplayer variety.

Looking at the player stats following the release of DiRT 3 demonstrated that a lot of players were frequently enjoying those modes. We'll be featuring new Party Modes in DiRT Showdown in addition to all of the Race, Hoonigan and Demolition events that will also feature online and in Splitscreen.
