The Last Guardian's Ueda Comments On Status

Update: Last week it was reported that Fumito Ueda, the creator of The Last Guardian, was finishing the game on a freelance capacity and that he had left Sony. Although we're no closer to the truth, Ueda has addressed the situation himself.

Ueda has recently tweeted in Japanese: "Recently, I have been getting a lot of questions…don’t worry, as usual, I’m still working hard on The Last Guardian." It's certainly not as in-depth of an update as we were hoping for, but on the bright side: At least half of the original rumor is true, and Ueda isn't totally abandoning the promising project.

Sony still has not officially commented on Ueda's status.

Original Story: Fumito Ueda, creator of ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and the still-unreleased The Last Guardian, has reportedly left Sony.

According to sources speaking to Eurogamer, Ueda is currently finishing The Last Guardian in a freelance capacity. The unconfirmed report cites Ueda's exit as one of the reasons the game continues to remain unfinished. It says Ueda will begin work on "person projects" once The Last Guardian is complete.

The long-awaited PlayStation 3 exclusive was originally scheduled to ship this holiday, but Sony delayed the title until 2012.

A Sony spokesperson told Game Informer the company does not comment on rumor or speculation.

    Last Guardian loses executive producer
Following Fumito Ueda departure, Team Ico's Yoshifusa Hayama resigns to take on creative director role at casual developer Bossa Studios.

Team Ico's The Last Guardian has been a long time coming, having first been teased back in 2005. Development on the PlayStation 3 project appears to be winding down, and in kind, Team Ico seems to be shedding some of its top talent.

Last week, word emerged that studio head Fumito Ueda had exited the company, and now executive producer Yoshifusa Hayama is also out. London-based social game maker Bossa Studios announced today that it has snapped up Hayama, naming him creative director at the studio.

Sony had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on Hayama's departure as of press time. However, Bossa did confirm Hayama's hire, and his profile has been added to the employee roll call on the studio's official website, bearing the title creative director.

Hayama will lead Bossa's efforts to create the studio's first 3D social game. In September, Bossa released its first project, Monstermind, through Facebook. According to the company, the game currently has 380,000 unique monthly users.
As for The Last Guardian, Sony's ambitious action adventure game currently bears no release date. It had previously been scheduled to arrive for the PS3 this holiday season. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Sony confirms Ico lead designer's departure

He only had two games to his name with Sony, but what titles they were

Earlier this week Sony confirmed rumors that Fumito Ueda, the man behind the landmark titles Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, was no longer working in official capacity with the company.

Ueda's decision to leave Sony and Team Ico after fourteen solid years with the console and electronics giant was surprising to say the least, as he was still still very much in charge of The Last Guardian's development. The good news is that Ueda is still expected to help complete the PS3 title on a contractual basis with Sony, which ought to lay the rest any additional fears that the company was planning on cancelling the title outright.

Things admittedly looked a little shaky for The Last Guardian when the title's producer, Yoshifusa Hayama, made his sudden announcement just last week to leave Sony for Bossa Studios not long after the original rumors that Ueda had similarly tendered a resignation first emerged.

GameStop mistakenly claims The Last Guardian cancellation

Retailer pulled game from website due to lack of release date

GameStop was left red-faced yesterday after it mistakenly informed customers who pre-ordered The Last Guardian that the PlayStation 3 title was cancelled. Customers contacted by the retailer through its automated phone system were promised a refund on any deposit they may have already put toward the title. If that caught gamers by surprise, you can imagine how Sony Computer Entertainment felt considering it never confirmed cancelling the oft-delayed Team Ico title.

The retailer later conceded that a system error in its database mistakenly labelled The Last Guardian as "cancelled" due to its lack of a specific release date. No human error was involved apparently, which doesn't really soften the blow. That's because the system even pulled The Last Guardian listing from the retailer website, meaning for the time being you can no longer find the title for sale at GameStop. Speaking to Gamasutra:

"The Last Guardian has not been cancelled by Sony as we incorrectly stated in an automated call to reservation customers. Because the game did not have a specific release date, GameStop made the decision to remove the game from our system. The Last Guardian will be reinstated for pre-order when a firm launch date is known."

SCE maintains The Last Guardian is still in development despite Team Ico recently losing key talent, namely the man behind Ico and Shadow of the Colossus himself, Fumito Ueda, who reportedly will help finish the title on contract. The developer has not yet put forward a firm release date for The Last Guardian in the meantime.

God of War dev not helping with The Last Guardian

Sony Santa Monica confirms it is not assisting Team Ico in developing long-awaited adventure game.

The Last Guardian remains in development, but God of War studio Sony Santa Monica is not assisting in its production, as had been reported last year.

"I'm never really sure how that got in the press, because as far as I'm aware we're not helping out with The Last Guardian," director of technology Tim Moss told Eurogamer. "The only way you can say that is the knowledge that we contribute back to the central tech groups benefits The Last Guardian. So I'm guessing someone was slightly misquoted."

Sony Santa Monica's reported involvement with The Last Guardian stems back to a Wired interview with Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida. At the time, he stated that the God of War developer, along with other outside studios, were assisting Team Ico on the game.
"It's not just Santa Monica," Yoshida said at the time. "We have great tech people in Worldwide Studios. We have a central tech group in the US and the UK so we are giving them whatever help they need."

Fellow Sony Santa Monica director of technology Christer Ericson confirmed that the various first-party teams do communicate with one another, but are not actively involved in eachother's projects.

"We tend to visit each other several times a year, and doing so we may exchange ideas. They've been here, and we've been there," he said. "We do ask each other how are you doing that, and just sometimes go over to provide feedback."

Last month, The Last Guardian creative director Fumito Ueda told gamers to "keep an eye out" for an official announcement on the game from Sony. No such announcement has yet been made.

Formally announced at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo, The Last Guardian tells a boy-and-his-dog tale, where the dog is a giant and feathered, yet seemingly amiable, beast. Developer Team Ico has not been forthcoming with specific plot details, but gameplay will involve the boy working with his companion to navigate a variety of environmental puzzles.

The Last Guardian has made "slow progress" for years. Sony senior vice president of product development Scott Rohde said in June that the game will ship "when it is absolutely ready." He also said Sony has no deadline whatsoever for the game.

@anik_lc name must be changed to the game
