Default Help me choose between 4th gen and 6th Gen

My i5, mobo and RAM got screwed (may be SSD too). So need a new set of processor, mobo, RAM and a casing. Max budget 33k (lower is better). I have searched in OSGS facebook page for prices and talked with them. Now if I get 4th Gen i5, it will be very cheaper than 6th. Need ur wise opinion. Please reply fast. I might go to IDB tomorrow or Saturday.

how did that happen? power surge? crappy ups? or just bad power supply? also let us know what psu do u have

4th gen vs 6th gen i5 gaming performance is same unless you use 980Ti, then in some games it differs like ~20%.

as far as i know there is no cheap 6th gen processor or mobo in BD, 6th gen i5 mobo ram will cost you 35-40k. lol. which aint worth it at all. you can get 4th gen i5 mobo and 16gb ram within ~29k

PSU- TT Smart modular 650 watt. 2 years old.

I was getting boot loop for last 1 yr. Resetting the RAM solved those. Today suddenly (during watching youtube) restarted and it wont come out from boot loop. Though i even got to windows few times, its getting BSOD after few mins. So I stop trying to prevent damage to other parts. I even tried re-installing windows. But it failed - "windows cant configure your computer hardware." Previously there were other symptoms like mouse lag, sudden sharp rise in CPU and RAM usage and wont come to normal unless i restart.

    - - - Updated - - -

can u pls suggest a model for processor and mobo?

No I mostly play DOTA. never in cod4.

Actually I checked other RAM (I have 2 sticks of 2+2 GB of team old RAM), also my suspect is mobo as this boot loop started when I strted using this mobo. First one got bios problem, so compy source gave me this crap. Returned it several times. Now about the processor and SSD, it might still be ok - but noway to check for me now. My idea is - its the memory slots are culprit.

Processor is 4 yr + old. So no point in getting another mobo for this processor. SSD might be damaged due to windows crash several times and boot loop. When i tried re-installing windows, it didnt complete. its a possibility. When I opened the casing The SSD and HDD were extremely heated. This is why I am giving up this system to prevent further damage to other parts.

prcoessor gets damaged/defect very rarely. so rarely you can push the processor to the bottom of the checklist.

i dont know what happened to your pc, but after all these years, i dont think there is any chance your gpu or psu or ram will get damaged because of SSD and HDD, at all. however you should ditch the mobo at once.

also, you can find 2nd hand 75 or 61 mobo... but its 2nd hand :\ and 1st hand is probably ~5.7k.

i am suggesting that... because according to benchmarks there is no difference between haswell i5 4460 and sandy bridge 2400 i5 gaming performance even in processor intensive games unless you use 980Ti. it doesnt matter if its 4 years old... even for r9 290 its minimal.

    - - - Updated - - -

i am also suggesting this because if you only spend 5.5k now, later you can upgrade to ddr4 and skylake or later i5. within 1 year ddr4 ram price will be lower than ddr3, and within 6 month you can get skylake i5 at ~14k with cheap mobo

That was my initial upgrade plan. I wanted to upgrade to 6th gen in January/February. Then this mobo got screwed. Processor - ur right. They dont get damaged easily. But I am sure at least one of the RAM is damaged. That's why I am thinking about the upgrade now.
Ok. I will look for a 6 or 7 series mobo. But I think I need check my system with another mobo 1st. I will take my cpu to IDB then.

    Update:
Checked RAM and SSD in my office PC. SSD ok, but RAM dead.
    SO net result
    MOBO and RAM confirmed dead.

Do some searching, am guessing you'll find some stores in Multiplan Center that has Z67 mobos or B75

I suggest that you try to find older B75 or H61 mobo, search around in IDB and Multiplan, and I believe you'll find one, and with that get 8 gigs of DDR3, the cheapest one which is G.SKILL NT one (1333 MHz though) which is I think 3.8k from Binary Logic. Then keep using it and wait till next year and finally upgrade to Skylake, when CPU, Mobo and DDR4 prices would go down, and cheaper H170 and B150 Mobo will be here. DDR4 prices would also go down when Skylake adoption will increase.

Or if you have the budget then go with 6th gen. You should avoid 4th gen at this point, if you will upgrade then upgrade to the newest.

I am confused. If I want to upgrade my pc in Jan/Feb is it logical to buy another mobo and RAM for this system spending 8-9k.

you can reuse the RAM. so it'll just be the motherboard, get a cheap motherboard now, and then later in february get a i7 6700 (non K) alongside a H170 motherboard that supports DDR3 RAM.

i5 6500 is around 16.5k. How much it will drop? Mobo price is high though. B150 12.5k.

    RECALIBRATED

option 1- we are still not sure if processor is ok but i kinda bet that it is. test it to be sure

    mobo ~5.5k
    ram 4k

    total 9k now.

    2016 mid or 2017 early
    6th gen core i5+mobo+ddr4 16gb= ~28k
(sell 2nd gen processor mobo ddr3= get more than 11k-13k)

    total spend= 9+ ~28 - ~12

    option 2

    buy 6th gen mobo i5 processor ddr4 16GB now= ~40k

    sell processor= ~8k

    total ~32k

    choose your option

im not sure how much it'll drop, but fairly positive that the drop in price in 4-5 months will be atleast more than the 4-5k bdt you'll be spending on a cheap motherboard now. and the RAM, you can just reuse it.

If that's the case then go for the upgrade, although you'll get stuff for cheaper in future but it's better to spend on an upgrade if you were already planning an upgrade in Q1 2016. If you can then wait for about next month or even this month until GIGABYTE B150 or H170 MoBos arrive in BD, and go with Skylake Core i5 6500, with DDR4 RAm (or even DDR3), if you plan on going cheaper (around 35k), if you've got much more budget them go with a 6600K (aftermarket cooler needed.), with Z170 and DDR4 RAM, but for this you need a much larger budget around 44k.

6th i5 will be 15k soon... maybe. and mobo price will drop significantly because no cheap mobo has been released yet.. once entry level mobo get released it will be like ~6k, thats why i think my recalibrated calculations are correct. i suggest you to take decision after reading my calculations. also, why would you need 6th gen in january? are you gamer only or a professional?

If Skylake i5 becomes 15k, it will start with the 6400, which is kinda weak, better to go with at least 6500. Also I think at launch only H150 is going to be about 6k, although who knows if @VANGUARD can get lower priced GIGABYTE B150 around 6k too, but this time there are more variants too, so if one is going for DDR4 they might have to shell out around 7-8k for DDR4 support.

I only play DOTA and Diablo 3 regularly and will be playing few other games like AC, Mass effect.

Point for my confusion is why spend money on old system as I was/am thinking of upgrade few months later.
Btw how long it may take for low budget mobos to come out?

    - - - Updated - - -

A 2nd hand H61 chipset would be a good solution for my current situation. Hope I get one.

Btw is there any possibility of damage of my other parts if they are left alone for a month? Also can I use my current CM 412 slim on 6th gen?
