Call Of Duty More Popular Than Studio Ghibli RPG In Japan

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 179,000 units on the PlayStation 3, while the highly anticipated Studio Ghibli RPG Ni No Kuni only sold 65,000 units.

Studio Ghibli may not be immediately recognizable to most American gamers. Its closest American analogy is probably Pixar. Studio Ghibli has never been involved in game design, and has even been vocally opposed to the medium at times. It was a surprise to hear that the studio decided to get involved in the world of video games, and many gamers were excited.

Japanese gamers have never been particularly fond of first person shooters. It's quite a shock to see, at least for this past week, that Modern Warfare 3 was not only the best selling game, but also the best selling game when competing with Ni No Kuni.

Are Japanese gamers tiring of the JRPG?
