    E3 2011: Halo 4 Announced

Microsoft brings out the big guns.

Microsoft announced this morning that it will release Halo 4 holiday 2012 for Xbox 360.

Microsoft made the announcement via a cinematic trailer at the end of its 2011 E3 press conference. Halo 4 marks the first proper Halo title created outside of creator Bungie, who signed off the series with 2010's Halo: Reach. Instead, Halo 4 will be the first major release from 343 Industries, Microsoft's internal Halo studio.

343i currently operates Halo Waypoint, a central hub for Halo content on Xbox Live. 343i also coordinated with developers Certain Affinity for Halo: Reach's Defiant Map Pack, and is working with Saber Interactive and Certain Affinity on this year's Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary, a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved using the Halo: Reach engine slated for this November.

President of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, Don Mattrick, described the game as the "beginning of a new trilogy" in the franchise, signaling a return to the narrative of the Master Chief, who last appeared in 2007's Halo 3.

    Halo 4 releases holiday 2012.

You can't be sure it'll be a total bummer, like microsoft said the director of Halo series who worked with Bungie will be back to this sequel.

and you forgot to put quote

As for those Halos naysayers, heres a peak of the art behind the sequel

Halo 4's Master Chief isn't the Master Chief you remember

"His behaviours have changed", hints 343 Industries

He's a byword for endurance, the one constant in a universe rocked by Covenant invasion, but according to 343 Industries, Master Chief hasn't made the transition from Halo 3 to Halo 4 psychologically unscathed.

Eagle-eyed fans picked up on changes to the Chief's armour in the new game's E3 reveal trailer, noting in particular that his mighty Spartan codpiece is no more.

"There's some story behind his new look," explained studio boss Frank O'Connor in an E3 interview. "There are specific reasons why he looks the way he does and why some of his behaviours have changed. We'll see in good time."

Halo 4 gets going some time after the previous game's conclusion, with the Chief's vessel drifting in space towards a mysterious planet. "A lot of things have changed in that intervening period," O'Connor hinted.

If character and setting have shifted, one thing Halo 4 aims to preserve is the feel of Bungie's original trilogy, with Microsoft Games Studios corporate vice-president Phil Spencer telling us that the new game "will live up to what fans fell in love with".

Here's the trailer again for your consideration. Notice any new personality quirks? We find it hard to believe you can slaughter that many Grunts without acquiring some sort of emotional baggage.

Halo 4 threatens Cortana with rampancy, hands Chief new armor mods

    Explore the Forerunner-built Shield Worlds

    Halo 4
will deviate from the original trilogy a bit by focusing on the Forerunners, but Master Chief and Cortana remain central figures in the coming conflict.
Chief will be as we remember him, for the most part, with a few new perks. We saw an instance of his in the Halo 4 CG teaser shown at this year's E3, when Chief uses thrusters on his armor to move through the wreckage of Forward Unto Dawn. For the most part, developer 343 is keeping these new modifications under wraps; according to 343's Frank O'Connor, the changes made to Chief's armor are actually tied to the game's story.

"There's some fairly radical modifications to his armour. Some of those are an artistic evolution, but some are connected to the story. We just can't talk about it yet. He's been in space for a long time."
As most Halo fans already know, advanced AI such as Cortana are prone to rampancy in just seven years, making them unstable and dangerous. Cortana's time draws near, and she was only able to last this long thanks to all the information she was exposed to. Even so, O'Connor mentions the negative effect this could have on her.

"Seven years is the lifespan for a smart AI before it enters a state called rampancy."
"Cortana was getting close to the end of her natural lifespan at the end of Halo 3 but she has been exposed to far more information than any other AI in existence. She's going to develop some muscle from that process but it also contributes to her rampancy - that much information makes things worse."
One of the greatest challenges for the team might be creating something new and refreshing for Halo 4 without completely undoing the previous Halo trilogy. By now, we've certainly grown familiar with Forerunner tech and architecture, but with the focus now falling on this mysterious ancient civilization, 343 must find ways to present them in an exciting light.
In addition to new weapons and vehicles, 343 plans to throw in plenty of new worlds to explore. While the Forerunners were constructing the Halo weapons, they also made Shield Worlds to protect their civilization from the Halos' devastating power. Halo's new art director Kenneth Scott describes the new environments as another "aspect" of the Forerunner architecture from previous games.

"It's a different aspect of Forerunner architecture. The thing that connected people to the first Halo is that mystery, so that's where a lot of our pressure on the art team is going right now. We want the player to feel that initial experience of discovery."
In O'Connor's words, the devs hope to reinstate "the sense of wonder and mystery," hence the return to exploration.

Halo 4's Master Chief Shown Off In Action Figure Form

McFarlane toys is producing more Halo figures, and they displayed many new models at the New York Toy Fair. Several additions to their Halo line are shown off here, with the most notable being the Halo 4 Master Chief figure seen above.

Nothing too unexpected, but fans of the series may be reassured to know that their hero hasn't received any drastic makeovers.

Halo 4 in-game screens appear online

First look at 343's in-engine Master Chief

The 343-developed sequel hasn't been seen since its E3 reveal last year, and we're still none the wiser as far as actual gameplay details are concerned.

The game's described as "the dawn of a new trilogy" and its developers have claimed they're taking it "back to what made Halo 3 amazing".

Halo 4 Details From The Microsoft Spring Showcase

Outside of a holiday 2012 release date and a brief E3 trailer last year, news on the Halo 4 front has been scarce. At Microsoft’s Spring Showcase event in San Francisco last week, many attendees were hoping for substantial information regarding Master Chief’s next adventure (and first to be developed by 343 Industries). We did receive some new information about the game, but the bulk of Halo 4 is still a mystery.

The 20-minute briefing began with a video that featured executive producer Kiki Wolfkill and 343’s Frank O’Connor talking up the importance of Halo 4 (you can watch the video below this article). They stressed that character development would be a key focus of the next entry in the series, and that fans will learn much more about Master Chief. Halo’s protagonist will be facing a new threat “unlike anything he’s seen before,” and O’Connor told me that this threat will make a significant impact on both the narrative and the gameplay. As anyone who played the first game knows, the appearance of a new enemy (the Flood) can drastically change the experience.

Spartan IVs will be introduced in this sequel, and they’re (as expected) bigger, faster, and stronger than the Spartans we’ve seen in Halo’s past. Cortana is also set to play a pivotal role in the game, but Wolfkill and O’Connor didn’t elaborate on her status.

O’Connor spoke about how the campaign and multiplayer felt like they existed in separate worlds in previous games, and the team wants to change that. They want both modes to feel like they’re part of the same universe, and there will even be an explanation in the story that illustrates why red Spartans fight blue Spartans in multiplayer. Here’s hoping it makes sense in the narrative, as it could certainly seem forced otherwise.

I wasn't shown any footage from the campaign, but they did show two very brief walkthroughs of multiplayer maps. Warhouse is an abandoned military manufacturing facility that features plenty of verticality as well as a large Cyclops II mech in the center. Previous features like grav lifts and man cannons were displayed in this map. The second area was Wraparound, a Forerunner facility that serves to create an artificial sun. As such, the sky is extremely bright, reflecting off the sleek floors and walls of the environment.

Halo: Reach allowed players to customize what their Spartan looked like on the battlefield, but Halo 4 promises to have custom armor pieces that serve more than an aesthetic purpose. O'Connor and Wolfkill wouldn't elaborate on the functionality of this system, but they did say it would be deeper than the loadouts of Reach.

It's nice to get any info at all about the upcoming FPS blockbuster, but the Spring Showcase didn't bring us any significant answers regarding storyline, multiplayer direction, or release date. We may not know much as of now, but O'Connor ended the presentation by teasing the announcement of a "big ticket item" later this year. We'll be sure to report back once we hear more about Halo 4.
