play the starter edition and see if you like it first, after lvl 20 you need to buy the game. it costs 19.99$ for the game and 49.99$ for the new expansion. and also monthly subscription. but generally the biggest expense would be buying all the cosmetics (spent most of my allowance as a kid on those :/ )

It's playerbase is going down now though, but it's still a very good game if you start from the beginning. i played it for 5 years but don't anymore.

The best way to get to know the game is to get into a private server. Choose your expansion, the one that you want to try out and than start from there. Anyone willing to pay for WoW still, is either very new like you or has too much money, as the game has gone to complete gem to utter garbage. But still, time pass er jonne it's ok.

i'd understand using private servers if you have played it a lot in the past and are now bored, but really? for someone that's just starting?

And also it wouldn't really be fun for someone to just get everything in the game unlocked while first starting.. it'd seem like a cheatcode having 100x exp gain especially for a beginner. and idk if it'll matter to him but it's also illegal, nothing will happen if you use one though i used several myself.

I didn't suggest him to join a server that lets you get everything at the beginning. Those are the worst developed ones.
