Thread: My 4.5 year old HD6850 has lost its fan.

Default My 4.5 year old HD6850 has lost its fan.

    Hi guys,
In March 2011 i posted my first post in this forum about buying a gpu + whole other accessories.
I was being greatly welcomed, bought HD6850 by your advises.
I have to say, that was the best decision of my life ! In those 4 years this card served my so well, best bang for buck, and had a great experience in games.
Special thanks to @error and @Dee in that post to help me out finding this card ! (http://banglagamer.com/showthread.ph...h-saphire-5770)
This card now doesn't run like a beast, but can run things in medium. Aged a bit
Yah, back to topic i guess xD
I had restart problems in my card recently. So i run furmark and tested that card is overheating ( >85 C ). I tried manual fan control to 100%. There should be definitely a increase of sound ( as my past experience ). But nothing.
I examined it more and found out the fan doesn't spin freely as it did. After spinning it with hand it doesn't keep spinning for a while. It stops immediately. Seems like it has been glued.
Anyone knows if i can repair the fan of the card ?

Clean the fan, there are dirt that are blocking the fan rotters. Check every possible, also remove the SATA or Power connectors if they are contacting the fan. You can also reply fresh thermal paste.

Here is my age old beast xD
FYI, 6850 was never a beast. It was a very mid-range card. I used one for myself as well.

And for god's sake, just get rid of that antique and spend some money on a newer card.

    Hi @all,
i did clean it. Reapplied thermal paste. There is no cable disturbing the fan blades etc.
After some google search i found out the motor might have died.
Where i can replace the fan ? Anyone knows ?

If you do not find any other better solution, slap a 120mm fan or two on the heatsink with some zip ties. It should work if done properly.

I will not be held responsible if you break your card doing this.

does that shop has any other gpu fan? can you give the precise location of that shop cause I fear that one of my gpu's fan may need to be replaced.
